knoxjn Posted July 18, 2012 Report Posted July 18, 2012 just a wee thought to see what you guys think if you were to use shorter races to to school your ybds do you think they would take say a hundred mile jump to enable you to compete in the young bird national a lot a people like steady jumps of say thirty to forty miles a time

Wiley Posted July 18, 2012 Report Posted July 18, 2012 Pigeons do not know the distance they are being released from, if they are fed right and healthy you can jump them any distance, all they know is they have to get home,
big blue bar Posted July 18, 2012 Report Posted July 18, 2012 in 2009 we missed the first couple of races and jumped our young birds into 125 miles the birds that came home did very well for us . if they have any homing instinct they will come no matter the distance ( within reason )

WulDon Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 any young living creature needs educated and pigeons are no different, i certainly wouldnt throw my kids in at the deep end first time at swimming! some great posts of examples of some great pigeons that have scored being jumped hundreds of miles, but this is just a fraction of a percentage of the many pigeons jumped into races over the years as opposed to the ones that never return to there homes! so statisticlly it is certainaly not a method i would adopt and imo is some what misleading to novices! educate your pigeons well and increase your success rate, imo of course!!!

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 I can't quote this as 100% fact as I don't have exact figures but think you'll more than likely find the majority of Open winners in the Yb nationals and birds in the top 1% of the result in the last ten years have been further or near enough as far as the racepoint before going to the race.

alec guinness Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Yep I personally would like to see the race scrapped but its not the Lewis McCalley flying club maybe not scrapped lewis but tweaked,2 races sections A,D,E AND F./// and B,C and G,same day semi-national or whatever, this would create more interest. ;)
