yeboah Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Wondered what fellow basics members felt regarding hours spent with doo's at this time of year ,My day starts every morning at 5-45 have breakfast then let widow cocks out at 6-30 to 7-15,meantime tend to all other birds except racing hens ,of to work 7-45 ,if working local hens out at 12 noon till 1 o'clock if things go to plan unlike today as they did not finish flying till 1-15 buggers,of back to work till 5pm then down road with hens if all goes well ,then cocks out for there fly ,and in meantime see to all others plus let youngsters into large cage and train them back through bob wires at feeding time (70 in just seconds tonight so getting there),if good night young out for 1 hr after hens back home then cocks out, then tidy up and see all is well,in between times try to eat and then take dog for a walk it is then well past 9pm ,cup of t have a look on basics then watch bit o telly before bed at midnight christ it won't be long till morning,(must be easier when retired),look forward to your reply's ps still love the doo's as much as i did in the 70's atb Mick .
JADE Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 Easy to see why young folk are not coming in to the sport. Must be so much easier if you dont have work. I have much the same schedule as you but dont train the hens just a fly at home 5 - 6 pm and young birds out at lunch if I can get home from work

b.massey Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Yeah I am currently back shift this week (2.30pm-11pm) been up since 6am to clean then send birds with training transporter. Will clean rest of sections then get birds in from training about 11.30-12. Then off to work again 1.45. Long days
b.massey Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 IT WILL BE WORTH IT Yeah usually hard work reaps sucess. I have managed a 1st 3rd 5th in first 3 races. No bad warm up to main events
Guest IB Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 One of my clubmates remarked that he was glad he only needed to work daylight hours with his birds during the racing season. I do believe a lot of the pleasure goes when looking after the birds starts to feel like a work routine.
PIGEON_MAN Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Was always told you only get out of them what you are prepared to put in,I also think that when it starts to be a problem at all looking after the birds its time to seriously think about weather you should keep them or not.

geordie1234 Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 things like installing grills helps with time or training on training vans etc
Guest Dorset-lad Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 things like installing grills helps with time or training on training vans etc You wouldnt get 2 people train together around here let alone a training van
geordie1234 Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 why is that mate? think there is atleast 3 i can go with here
Guest Dorset-lad Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 why is that mate? think there is atleast 3 i can go with here They just dont do it here Geroge they seem to like to train on there own, if they got a van going ill be the first to put birds on it keeps cost down and you get to see how they return and with YBs they would be learning to split before racing, from what i heared a bloke tried a couple of years ago and never got the support so stopped doing it. Shame

dal2 Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 There is absolutely NO way I could keep pigeons to a DECENT standard alone cos my work and sporting commitments is laughable. I scrape oot in the morning at 6.30 lettin hens oot for 45 mins and then scrape, feed and water the stock shed!In for brekkie and shower then work. Old boy comes aboot 7.15 and scrapes the cocks oot and they gan for an hour. Then the two yb sections and he will probs get hame aboot 10am. He is back at 1pm to let hens and cocks oot for another spin!! I get hame at 4.30-5 dependin on what broke down!!! Straight oot wae hens and cocks again and another scrape of the stock shed. All fed and watered and doors shut!!! Think everybody loves the doos and if its just a hobby and no about competeing then you can take it at your liesure but diffo if ye want to be near the front JMO I HAVE NOT SEEN THE BIRDS RETURN FROM A RACE SINCE THE THIRD YB RACE OF LAST SEASON :emoticon-0179-headbang:
Guest Dorset-lad Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 What about asking a couple of your club mates train together take shot's each? Might have one who will be willing to do it thats about it i think, we will see how it plans out.
billt Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 Might have one who will be willing to do it thats about it i think, we will see how it plans out. You've just reminded me how cut-throat racing is on the South Coast, training with someone else would be unusual and don't win too often Brian you'll not have a lot of friends left.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted May 9, 2012 Report Posted May 9, 2012 There was an article in the homing world last year taken from an old pictorial on John McLaren when he flew in Cowplain Hampshire. He didnt scrape out,he fed in an agricultural hopper he topped up once a month,he watered the birds in an agricultural drinker that he changed once a week,he stated he was rarely at his loft before 9 am....oh and he won Pau with the NFC Changed days
