I think this seaon has been the worst ever here in West Cumbria.Luckily my losses are small compared to some fanciers, but only keeping a small race team any losses are large. Some GOOD fanciers loosing 20s in one race????

IMO.and where the birds are getting reported (mostly Wales) clashing is the problem and not birds that are unfit to race.Lindsay C.

Ive got a young bird team of 40 now want to build from ther ive bought some nice birds but the 3 that look the best i got given ive lost no young, give up on old birds

You remind me so much of me.

Was a time when y/b's went 35 miles first chuck in different directions anda 65 miler from the coast week of their first race, and had great results. Thought nothing of a couple of 20 miles first and second chuck and into any race as y/b's....

But been brought down to earth with a bang this season. 2y/o's and yearlings just started training this year... losses very bad.

A new learning curve yes! I'd forgot a simple equation. My former teams had been weaned out over a few years, What was left was proven reliable stock and were capable of my ways. Yes they'd had to be, and one never really takes stock when first strting out just how many birds one really loses till their team has been honed and sorted.

Once dusted, one knows pretty much what liberaties one can take. Know and their capabilities.

So have now 34 y/b's. Losing a few of the top.... something again never hardly happened, just 1 or two. But again, one forgets it used to be that way when first starting out.

Yes have to admit I've have a rude wake up call.

To say the weather has been indifferent this year would be an understatement. The cold east winds had taken its toll especially on the yearlings raced in my club. Due to the fluctuating temperatures, cold east winds & lack of warm sunshine Its been one big battle to get condition on the pigeons and an even bigger one trying to keep it there which doesn’t help none. My losses have been light compared to others in my club but I’ve been careful what I send and to where with one eye permanently fixed on the weather. To date I’ve dropped 3 w/h cocks from 24 & 5 naturals from 22 which exceeds the amount I lost in the whole of racing last year and that’s with boxing clever.

ive lost 3 out of my 4 old birds but touch wood i aint lost a young bird yet and they are ranging for about an hour a day better than last year when i lost 17 young birds just flying from the loft.

I think it's a MUST that every youngster should fly the whole of the yb programme providing as we all know, there ok, feather, health, bodywise.  If not, you'll find you keep em' all through the off season only to lose them in a couple of next years races. We must also be very selective at the end of the season and don't fill the boxes up just for the sake of it.  I certainly think with the increase in transport cost of our birds, cost of corn etc we should only keep what we consider our very best.  Myself, I could of raced this whole season with 5 pigeons because it's those five that are taking my positions inland and o/seas.
