    old birds

In general terms there are two 'classifications' for pigeons...Young birds and Old birds. As posted by Hotrod, from 1st January following it's year of birth it's an old bird. In this year following it's birth it is raced or shown as an Old bird, unless there are special classes in shows or special prizes in racing purely for year old pigeons...Yearlings.
  17. Welcome to the mad house Ian. Great bunch of people on this site, and if you get involved, you will enjoy it. Don't be afraid of posting what you think is a daft question, because amongst the good advice, you'll also get some daft answers !! ;) Glad to hear of another newcomer to the sport, best wishes for the future !!!
  18. Many , many thanks to those who posted their best wishes. David went through his surgery at lunchtime. They had to make quite an incision in his lower torsoe, and discovered his appendix had become 'fused' to his bowel. The surgeon removed his appendix, but with his skill ( I believe ) he was able to sever the fusion, without harm to the bowel. Was heavily sedated with Morphine when we visited, but in his conscious moments, rest assured I passed on the best wishes of those members who posted. Many thanks again, Paul. Cheers folks :)

  21. Son (21) taken to hospital last night. Has been placed on 'emergency surgery' list, so just waiting here in the house for 'that phone call' Can't settle to do anything to be honest . Shitty day so far !! :'(
  22. Don't see many hawks about at all this past couple of years. We have a pair of Buzzards very close to us, and I think they keep the rest at bay.

    TRAINING

At those sort of temps. I wouldn't ask them to do it. One thing you have to also remember, is that whatever the 'ground' temperature is, it's always going to be colder the higher up you go....so, 2 degrees will be much colder in the air, and that's not taking into account any wind-chill !!

    yearlings

Much wisdom in what Rob says. Totally depends what type of birds you have, or what your long term plan is. Are they sprint, middle or distance pigeons ?
  25. Last time I was at Ponderosa, Tony showed us around for a while, then gave us free access to all compartments, catch what you want, and also left us with the loft/breeding books, so we could check ring numbers for ourselves. Class stock and wonderful hosts.
