I asked about the dark splashes 'cos I knew beautyhomer would know the importance ;D, its to do with dominant and recessive genes (I think) - so am I right in thinking that black splashes mean recessive red ? I have a red cock with black splashes who has produced only one red out of 7 youngsters when paired to a red hen, the youngsters have been blue chequers or blue bar, with one mealie cock and one red hen as off spring - I find it quite fascinating ;D

  3. Last year paired a dark cheq pied to a red hen - got one red cock, also paired red cheq white flight cock to blue cheq hen - got 2 dark red chequers ( one cock, one hen ) - no white feathering on any of them.

I agree with you, new plywood floors we put down this year need replacing - but nothing to do with water, its all splintered through catching with a scraper, we have a chipboard floor in one area that has been soaked many times in disinfectant etc, and that has faired much better - and that one has lasted 3 years.

  13. verbascum - theres hairy types that are tall and non-hairy, I have the latter, not so tall, green leaves and flowers LOL ;D ;D ;D look it up on the internet, verbascum, common name mullein - you do get named varieties of them, but they're expensive........   14. I had a sparrowhawk attack on Thursday in my garden, though it only slightly injured one of the birds - this morning there are 4 sparrowhawks circling over the are. Now that Joe Murphy and I are on first AND second name terms - I might give him a call !! LOL ;) ;D ;D ;D :B :B

  17. Friend of my husband was at work, asked his wife to time in and she had never done it before - in 25 years- 45 minutes it took her - don't know who deserved the medal - her for persevering or the bird for evading capture - she hadn't a clue - he fitted sputniks immediately after !
