REDCHEQHEN Posted August 1, 2018 Report Posted August 1, 2018 The work of club secretaries is undervalued and particularly in my club, some of the members are awkward and bloody minded and create extra work. My club has 19 member lofts, my OH is secretary and does all the assigning of rings the results sheet, banks the money works out the pool money, pays it out.takes the result over to the fed secretary for the fed result(18 mile round trip) Organises the payout, the artists the catering the engraving of the trophies. The presentation - setting out the trophies, the speeches organising the guests to do the presentation. Buying the raffle prizes, guests thank you presents and flowers. Putting together the prize cards, points money, organising the AGM, speeches - it's never ending. My husband gets £50 for expenses (increased from £25 2 years ago) it doesn't even cover the petrol money to the fed. He gets abuse, there are those who will not pay on time, whether it's the subs, vaccination money, or race money - it's a full time job - for £50 a year - they're taking the p##s

REDCHEQHEN Posted August 1, 2018 Author Report Posted August 1, 2018 I forgot to say - my other half works as well, a tiring debilitating job as a home delivery driver
Kyleakin Lofts Posted August 1, 2018 Report Posted August 1, 2018 I think this is the case with a lot of secretaries. Both of my clubs are very similar, with the exception that others help carry out some of the tasks you have listed. The "wages" amount to no more than a gratuity. After performing all your hard work, here is a financial gift to allow you to treat your OH to a meal because you have not been available to them. The "work" performed was done because you enjoy your hobby. This should not be the case, however, if you pay a wage, then the costs to the members increases and given the age and financial circumstances, you may lose members and further increase the burden for those remaining. The only solution is to spread the workload. If every member does a little, then the secretary will have less to do and the "gratuity" will be more commensurate with the task.

paddymac Posted August 1, 2018 Report Posted August 1, 2018 I was secretary of my local club for 10yrs, as already been said it is a thankless task that no money could pay you for it. I never got a payment but had my club fees free which was a sum of £25. I still had to pay my RPRA fees and Nipa fees. If ever asked again I would doubt I would say yes.

The other thing, not mentioned yet, is usually your own pigeons suffer and results drop. When the secretary gives up the job, it is noticed that their results begin to improve in a lot of cases.
Tony C Posted August 1, 2018 Report Posted August 1, 2018 Yep they're taking advantage of he's good nature. Put a proposition in at the AGM that secretary fees shall be £xx per loft. Let the members know should it get defeated he will be standing down.

Most definitely more time spent with my birds Andy
Wiley Posted August 2, 2018 Report Posted August 2, 2018 Our sec on north gets £500 a year that’s without ets
flying fifer Posted August 2, 2018 Report Posted August 2, 2018 If we were to pay our Club and Federation Secretary an hourly rate, we would be bankrupt.Every year at AGM his gratuity is discussed and voted upon but he never takes it.He runs his own building business, as well as organising ETS and makes himself available for delivery and collection of food at Club rooms. Without doubt unsung heroes of our sport..

Let the members know should it get defeated he will be standing down.I think that's what I'll do, we can't continue to subsidise the club and be out of pocket each week, which reminds me - I haven't got my money back for the printer ink I paid for on Amazon!
ovy1255 Posted August 2, 2018 Report Posted August 2, 2018 Sorry you are not in a fair club!We just lost our sec a few weeks ago -great guy.Now we spread his work around --whoever wins puts baskets away and cleans and sprays them as well as seals and strings, the result for fed sec is done in basket hut on saturday and winner takes result to fed sec.one member has small program he done on laptop so does pools and fees on friday night and makes a list what everyone owes in a few mins.I do ets assignment and sort ets out.We should be thinking of e mailing and using bacs for payment to fed sec but were OLD.TIME TO TELL THEM --things need to change.
Walter swanston Posted August 2, 2018 Report Posted August 2, 2018 Interesting post I take the perhaps unusual view that it is a privilege to be a club secretary.I have been secretary of my club for about 20 years I have been auditor, president and now Vice President of my federation.I have never taken any payment except occasionally petrol money for travelling to meetings of the SHU council..I am not and never will be much of a fancier but I love having racing pigeons around and I suppose I feel that taking on these administrative positions allows me to give something back to the fancy which gives me such enjoyment.

I think a lot are in this position Walter, but purse strings are tightening and people are having to reconsider.
