Walter swanston Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 Two 2015 birds build a ginormous nest in a nest bowl out of tobacco stalks. They then hatch two babies which are perched on the top of the pile like mountaineers.Everything seems OK and I ring the birds on Sunday.I go out this morning and find one dead on the nest box floor obviously fallen or pushed off this gigantic nest.Question should I discourage this pair from this type of nest building?
JohnQuinn Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 This can happen with any depth of nest Walter and has happened in my lofts many times over the years so for what it's worth I would leave their best as is. Have always thought there is a reason behind this known only to the birds but it may well just be bad luck for the one fallen/ejected from the nest. Jmo.
showman Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 What about reducing the amount of nesting material you provide ? Nest building is an urge governed by nature. Keep an eye on the size of nest, and should they be over zealous, daily remove small amounts of material. The urge will remain and the end result more acceptable.Have done this a few times, and it worked for me.JMO.
Roland Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 I think Showman yo can have a far bigger problem in them raiding other nests for the material. Guest Redadam Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 Don't supply neat materials just a nest bowl and a nest felt if birds bring twigs or moss In and make nest fair enough but don't provide it
walterboswell59 Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 ive had the same problem with the stalks and big nests but find if i take most of the nest away after they are sitting a few days they dont rebuild so problem solved the yearling hen jenna had built a nest of twigs almost two foot high and was the reason i sent her to clermont national and was 11th open not because of the size of the nest but for the effort she put in to get the twigs
REDROCKET Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 I think a doo that puts so much effort in has something to fly home to that's a keen bird IMO and again Walters bird proves that I think
Roland Posted March 9, 2016 Report Posted March 9, 2016 I have some nuisance pairs Showman, which like to nest on the floor etc. They build pretty big ... via raiding nests for the tobacco stalks.
Roland Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Another problem I've just experienced regards high nests Showman -and I nearly missed the hatchings. Was ill and had a day or so from loft last week. But so high never saw them or eggs, had to look under and into the nest box. Saw them and rung them on high nest. Nigh to top of box. Found one had died yesterday .... had slipped of the top and down to floor. Parents never noticed whatever and one down. So mate will be singled reared.
eastcoaster Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 Have one cock who just builds and builds and I keep wrecking them he has lost 2 young and 2 eggs so far and tonight he was fighting me off as I wrecked it again if he ends up any good I,ll never get any ybs off him lol.
