Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 20, 2016 Report Posted July 20, 2016 My Brother and Brother in Law have a kind of partnership with my brother doing all the training. They started of at 10 miles with 60 youngsters and 33 made it home. They have dropped birds virtually every toss and started the second team with 14 at 25 miles and 2 days later they have 3 home. they have now decided to stop training altogether.. I found John Quinn's article on "Mental Training" very interesting and as my youngsters have not seen the inside of a basket yet with the first race this week-end which I had no intention of sending them to, I have decided to give it a try, so first race for mine will be Otterburn 84 miles with the Midland Fed and we will see what transpires.. Mind AV are at Stob's Camp again this week Peter if ye fancy a 25mile less/easier option
peter pandy Posted July 20, 2016 Author Report Posted July 20, 2016 Mind AV are at Stob's Camp again this week Peter if ye fancy a 25mile less/easier option Thank's Lewis might just see yer on Friday.
Novice Posted July 21, 2016 Report Posted July 21, 2016 Thank's Lewis might just see yer on Friday.Interesting experiment Pedro. For me Stobs camp would be a better option than Otterburn which must be the worst race point in the UK.
peter pandy Posted July 21, 2016 Author Report Posted July 21, 2016 Interesting experiment Pedro. For me Stobs camp would be a better option than Otterburn which must be the worst race point in the UK. Midland going to Kelso this week !! Once again another "F" up with the Race Prog card. So with the youngsters away for 75 minutes this morning they should be able to do 45 miles or at least anything with a bit of savvy should.

Its 61 mile but I am confident even if they arny so they can follow the leader LOL..
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 Emm, Another moment of old age and memory loss !. Its 61 mile but I am confident even if they arny so they can follow the leader LOL.. See some of the other lads on the site with very good returns with untrained youngsters. How did ye fare Peter?
peter pandy Posted July 24, 2016 Author Report Posted July 24, 2016 Having made the decision not to train the youngsters and put them straight into 62 miles some will say cruel bugger. They could be correct, however I am not one who would send them in any condition except fit, healthy and capable.I will start with Friday afternoon and with two fifteen bird baskets laid out and drinkers on it was into the loft to close the shutters darkening it down. To explain the situation !, before I attempt to handle my birds, I put the light on in that section and close the shutters which keep out all light, then it is only a case of switching the light off and walking over to pick the bird up with no fuss and put it into my 6 bird basket,I then transport them from the loft to the shed where I can then go through them, looking for bent flights which would require steaming and I have a kettle which is solely used for that job, after checking the feathers I do the nostrils as it is surprising what you can find up there, anything from a small down feather to a piece of straw. If all is ok and I am 100% happy with it, It goes into the fifteen bird basket. Thirty youngsters later I am only left with 14 capable to send, cover flights missing from the others. Saturday and its total cloud cover here in the Metropolis and I am aprehesive when I get word they are liberated. Sitting in my garden with the dogs Jack and Jill time is wearing on and I start wishing I had not switched the computer on this fekin week and what the fek does pals Quinny and Jammy know aboot doos..My Bruv and Bruv in Law get one bang on time, then another yin, then another, and another, and its getting to the stage that every time I look there way another bird is burling round, I am, by this time totally demented and the dogs run back into the house.. 90 minutes later I still have "F" all and decide to go down and see how they are getting on hoping that it was streeters I was seeing dropping into them, But the truth of the matter was they had 14 from the 17 sent home which put me in good mood "NOT". After a couple of minutes I wished them well and hoped they won [which they did] when one of mine went sailing over and into the loft.. The pair of cheeky c##ts said, are you not going to time it in smiling ?, So I gave them a withering look and left, dejected, I was suicidal..60 minutes later I got my second bleeding from the chest so it was a germoline job and I started to calm down but it was another hour before I had another home which continued untill 21.30 when I had 10 from the fourteen sent. Another one turned in this morning so I am three missing. On reflection, they all came singly and hopefully they have learned much and will be hard to lose. I know one thing its definitely not for the faint hearted this nae training. :emoticon-0136-giggle:
andy Burgess Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 well done , you trusted them and they homed , done well for a first toss i would say
peter pandy Posted July 24, 2016 Author Report Posted July 24, 2016 Cheers Andy, and them twa doon the street topped the Fed.
geordie1234 Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 Nothing worse than watching doos get timed in infront of you..I'm on a compound so it's instant death when someone times before me lol bt it's prob made me a better fancier
andy Burgess Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 Cheers Andy, and them twa doon the street topped the Fed. well done your Brother then . will you continue "just to send" now Peter ??
peter pandy Posted July 24, 2016 Author Report Posted July 24, 2016 If you are going to try something different then you have to give it a chance !! So I will continue till the end of the season then evaluate the pros and cons. For starters though it saves petrol in my 4X4 running down the road twice a week.
peter pandy Posted July 26, 2016 Author Report Posted July 26, 2016 Sunday, And I dont think it stopped raining here in the Metropolis so kept the Y/B in and let the auld yins and late breds out for a bath. When I called them in six hours later they were like drowned rats but appeared to have enjoyed the splash about.Monday, and the Y/B were out and flew 3/4 hour in the morning and were back in before the rain returned but as it went off late afternoon they were back out and put 1 hour in before calling them in at 20.00 hrs.Tuesday, and its a lovely morning with me contemplating sending them for a thirty mile toss !!. Pacing up and down a couple of times I really had to refrain from getting the training baskets out, instead opened the doors and let them fly for an hour round the area before bringing them in and repeating again this evening. When you have been training at every opportunity for nearly 60 years it is difficult to break the habit but I am gritting my teeth and persevering. [Like the auld indian said to Clint Eastwood]..
geordie1234 Posted August 2, 2016 Report Posted August 2, 2016 So how did the untrained doos go this week?
peter pandy Posted August 2, 2016 Author Report Posted August 2, 2016 Sorry for the delay in the report as I had differing things on my mind lately, Anyway last Friday afternoon and all were basketed ready for re-handling. With 2 injured from the previous week they were put back in the loft, Another 2, I was not happy with so gave them 1/4 tablet Ronadizanol and put back, Another 1 heavy in the moult so that left me sending 21 of which 14 were in the basket for the first time for the 85 miles. I could not fault them handling wise, but one never knows what is inside their heads. Saturday and Feds are being liberated at Otterburn "slaughterburn to some" but Midland are waiting for the rain to start, So its raining in the Metropolis and we get word they are up at 09.45 and I reckon on 2.1/2 hours given the size of the convoy.12.08 one arrives but is full of flying and 2 drop into them doon the street that topped the Fed last week before mine hits the landing board and starts to do a little jig before coming in, so its in the clock at 12.11 another arrives at 12.12 without hanging about and they are coming singly every couple of minutes and I have 13 in the first hour and no more till Monday morning when I get another so have 14 from 21 dropping 7 first time in a basket youngsters..The upshot is the first 2 were first timers and finished 6th & 7th in the club..The downshot is dropping 7 that to me were perfect in every way.It has always been a belief of mine that you will only be left with 1/3rd of your youngsters at the end off the season so hopefully wont lose many more and the duffers that we all have are gone.Them twa doon the street were 4th & 5th and all home.Sunday saw me giving them a bath as they were not to keen on flying and Monday they done about 45 minutes morning and evening with to-day hopefully about the same morning and evening when back out at 19.00 hrs to be back in at 20.30 hrs. This week its Appleby 112 mls and why we are going there is beyond belief with the Southern Uplands directly in front of them. If an East wind is forecasted I will not be sending..
geordie1234 Posted August 2, 2016 Report Posted August 2, 2016 Decent tbh considering they are untrained maybe just lose the rubbish quicker
walterboswell59 Posted August 2, 2016 Report Posted August 2, 2016 (edited) to me its a simple problem peter if you dont train them even short tosses and put them straight into a race its pure luck what and how many comes the right way home m8 get the old head back on jmo the east boys can get away with doing that stuff they have the hand rail all the way home lol Edited August 2, 2016 by walterboswell59
peter pandy Posted August 2, 2016 Author Report Posted August 2, 2016 Walter old mate,, "I've started so I'll finish". As Bamber Gascoigne would say. It is a case of "Dont knock it till you try it" As Davy Jamieson and John Quinn would say.. I also wrote in a post a year or two ago about a late bred hen that was never raced and brought up to Scotia, spent 5 months in my brothers shed then a month or two in my loft and when trying to break her she flew back down to London [Hatfield] spent a week or two there then flew back up and I lost her from a the first race I sent her to. Now she probably ended up in a Bassas belly and I aint keeping them to lose training and its like John says he will feed them once a week racing not evey day he goes training and I never ever believed you had to show them every lamp post down the road.No doubt this will put me in the bad fancier category to some BUT I used to give them small trainers increasing all the time out to 40 miles before racing then twice a week at 30 miles and still ended up with 1/3rd of the young bird team with losses every race AND THIS WAS BEFORE THE BASSAS WERE A PROBLEM..Maybe the problem is that we have turned soft and it's too easy to reach for a medicine bottle instead of facing the fact that a good one was never ill in its life. We treat for diseases we never have and reckon we know better than mother nature who gets rid of the weaklings. Instead of facing reality, we depend on all the potions under the sun..I have a big bucket and their is always room in it for any of mine that goes wrong under my care.
peter pandy Posted August 6, 2016 Author Report Posted August 6, 2016 Wednesday morning and I am having a chat over the gate with him doon the street B.in L. and we are contemplating to-days race and I told him I would not be going to Appleby but perhaps Otterburn again with A.V. and he starts telling me he is really disappointed as he wanted to beat me 3 times on the trot in the club [Denny].Come Friday it has got to me as he has never beat me 3 times in his life and I dont want to disappoint him so send 8 that are in decent feather and he is chuffed at the prospect of achieving a lifetimes ambition and sends 17.To-day Saturday and Midland lib 8.45 in a NE wind which on checking with the local weather station its 7mph SW wind so I am saying to myself 10.15 should be a good yin.10.16 and in the gutter drinking the crap is my Pied Cock which no amount of coaxing is interested in. 10.20 and I am pulling whats left of my hair out. 10.25 and he is getting his neck wrung. 10.29 and I slump into my chair admitting defeat and he pops through the ETS trap at 10.30.They say every cloud has a silver lining and their could be a little truth in that as him doon the street isnae in till 10.44 Well and Truly Stuffed. :emoticon-0136-giggle: First bird in the Club 10.28 and I finished 3rd.Maybe there is something in this nae training after all.
