I noticed birds I had brought in this year had quill lice, As I give quite a lot of Garlic in the drinker and vinegar in the bath their is no more lice on them. I Have in the past dipped them in Chlorocarb,Duramitex and some other I forget which, and found that, yes it cleared the feathers, but also removed the oils from them and the only way you can tell if they have recovered what you have taken out is when the tail feathers have ceased loking bedraggled after a bath. Has any one noticed that latebreds with nest feathers especially the tail take hours to dry out, so imagine what they are like when racing and get drenched in a heavy shower. Perhaps we should be aware of the chance of showers when racing / training them with the possibility they will be put down with no opportunity of rising again. JMO.

cant say ive noticed this peter but ill watch for it in future food for thought m8

forgot to ask you do you put vinegar in the bath water as i said thats something i have not tried if so how much do you put in

I myself roughly put in 10mls per litre, find its the most economical and best way to keep them free of creepy-crawlies.

I spray the lofts with poultry shield and bath with borax, a wee drop of tea tree oil and the birds are looking good for the show pen

seen this on another site

Ivemectin Sheep Drench 3 cc’s to a gallon in the bath water will kill all parasites, lice, mites, flies, depluming mites etc. Give twice monthly and the birds will be pest free. It can be used as a spray, 10 cc’s to the gallon on the loft walls and nests to kill parasites and it is not harmful or will give off any fumes. Never get Ivermectin on your skin or it will penetrate into you. If you are spraying it wear protective gear like a mask and overall suit. Never inhale mist. We have not used anything but ivermectin for parasites in several years. One bath will totally eliminate the stubborn quill mite.

I remember one year I dipped the ob's in Duramitex, it was a disaster for me. Firstly in front of another fancier I dipped them on the Thursday (stupidly) before the first ob race. The sun was shinning but there was a north east wind blowing at the time which didn't seem too bad, at least that's what I stupidly thought at the time. Next morning I got a shock when entering the loft. There was a pair of dead ybs in one of the bottom nest boxes which had died from the severe cold that night. I left the windows open thinking it would help dry the birds. Instead the obs only covered the youngsters for a short while obviously getting them wet and with not enough feathers on them at the time they perished. I also had to put another two single ybs in other nests out their misery! Luckily for me most of my ybs were shifted at the time or a good few more would have suffered the same fate.

However its a lesson learned guys iv'e never done it again. Please take my advice and remember if dipping them to do it in say June when its warm! The other thing was I sent most of the team to the race. I remember the lads on the ringer saying hell almighty whats that smell when the birds were in their hands and we had a good laugh about it at the time! Yes no doubt the birds were clean but they struggled in the race and I lost a few that day I never expected to loose. I thought they were slow in their next few training tosses so I thought around midweek that's it no more i'll just let them sit around in the sun. I was concerned further as they were late on the saturday. However I had relised mid week that the Duramitex had left what I would describe as a film on their feathers. So I decided no more training for the 3rd race and just let them laze about again from the sunday til the next race. The sun had came out a bit between basketing for 2nd race and 3rd race which seemed to help as I won the 3rd race and the birds were in better condition with good returns!

Obviously I dipped them too near the start of racing and also should have done it when weather was warmer. Deffo takes a few weeks to get the feathers back into the condition they should be in and as some pb members have said lord help them if they get caught in heavy showers for it will deffo effect them and maybe pull them down. I had previously dipped them with no problems but was caught out here. Since then iv'e used powder or one spot on neck! A hard lesson learned, don't do what I did above lol!!!

I put cider vinegar in my bath because it raises the ph in the water and stop cross contamination from birds droppings and it also kills bacteriabacteria

and it helps reduce lice because of the acid in it
