trying to work out the use of fats on old birds in the form of sunflower ,hemp etc

I have thought in the past to add it to the mixture about 3-4 feeds out from a 300 distance type race and for more days for a longer race, , but now I have been reading about some of the diet mixtures that are in the main just fats like vl diet 1000 (20 % fat) the bamfords one etc and fanciers seem to feed this Monday and Tuesday each week before going on to a high carb widowhood corn which goes against what I have done in the past it also seems the distance does not matter either its still fed even if the race is say 150 miles

I just wondered if anyone could point out why this is to me or why they seem to just use protein on a sunday before fat Monday and Tuesday then carbs

I have always gone protein sunday and Monday ,carbs Tuesday then on to a mix of carbs and fats depending on the distance regarding the amount of fat added

thanks

I can't remember exactly Neil, but fats have to be put in to cover their use. First hour the birds fly on carbs, then they move on to their fats. x weight of fats per hour of flight, after the fats are used they start on their muscle until they drop.

The carbs contain sugars which convert to fats for storage.

I also fed proteins, Sunday Monday; carbs, Tuesday, Wednesday; and carbs / fat mix Thursday, Friday.

This year I might just make up a mix and feed them to see how they cope after all they are choosy at times; maybe they know themselves. :D

neil this is not needed with natural birds my birds get the same mix every day from start to finnish with only hemp seed added to the mix for the longer races keep it simple m8 and let the birds choose what they want with a mix and they will take what they need when they need it they know better than us m8 if your mix has good variety the birds will sort it for you these guys are kidding them selves on that they know what the pigeon needs imo

see what you mean maybe protein on return and maybe 25% fats added to the race mix once we get over 5 hours instead of adding at a set time

hi Walter

I have up to know fed beans in the hopper with a light hi carb feed on top each day with a bit of fats near to a distance race

but I was thinking maybe I should move with the times, what would be the make up of your base ?

i use all rounder m8 its much like versalaga neil with lots of maze and small stuff but only 10 28 pence a bag to which i will add 10 percent barley and i add beans when rearing yb and hemp for more oil and fat for the longer races m8 and thats it

Energy loading I think they call it Neila. What I understand about it is pigeons fed high fats towards the end of the week will store the fats in their liver, the liver expands to absorb these fats. If fats are fed ad-lib throughout the week their bodies get use to this diet and the fats are dispersed around their body which will do more harm than good.

Walter do you use the barley as a guide to stop feeding or do you leave the food down for them

thank you for your advice on this topic

thank you tony

what has thrown me is the use of super diet by some top fanciers early in the week before going on the normal sport type mix, and looking at a lot of these diet mixtures they carry as much fat as the energy type mixtures , on the vl web site it says to feed super diet post race and pre race but having read some articles and spoke with some decent fanciers they seem to feed say Monday to Tuesday ?

What throws me is us trying to guess whats good for the doos ,the thing we know is they need protien to build muscle ,so that to me is beans or peas any surplus the bird stores as fats ,so if keeping up exercise regime the protiens and fats should be fed every day and the carbohydrates maize etc shuold be the one built up over the week starting the week on barley. What was said about Hemp i agree totaly before ,igave hemp the day of basketing.

widowhood flyers are breaking there birds down neil thats a different ball game m8 but other widowhood guys dont break them down and win just as much i dont see any need to continue to break birds down on a weekly bassis hours on the wing will do that and a good mix of grain will build them back up after a hard fly but i know very little about widowhood and would not want to break my birds down and its not done in any other sport i know of its all about building up not breaking down imo but everyone to there own

I watched a video on youtube and a fancier said he doesn, t break his birds down after a race because the musles are already depleated due to the hard work and they need protein to repair , seemed to make sense l will try post a link up.

I know of fanciers who feed super diet at the front end of the week. I did so myself a few years back in the belief that its a more varied and high value mix which in turn would be more beneficial. I later learnt the value of barley and kicked the diet into touch.

thanks Tony ,

are you still trying the bean based feed for the distance birds ? I done well with a system close to yours

from 270 miles I had a 3rd combine and a 4th combine from 365 miles

According to what I have read so far Eddy Newcombe should never have won a race far less been the most successful National flier in Scotland.

His 365 days feed was 1/3 BEANS 1/3 AMERICAN CORN 1/3 PEANUTS. I am off the belief that we the fanciers are being brainwashed by the feed company's such as V/Laga to use their mixes as they are the best according to them and feed suppliers who stock nothing else but the product they wish to flog you.

a pigeon may know what it needs to eat

to stay healthy

to breed

to repair muscle etc etc

but it doesnt know your going to send it 5/600 miles therefore any extra fuel you can give them(what they dont think they need) will help them on their way.
