We man Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Any Scottish fanciers members of this club, any members on here who would be willing to race from Barcelona etc, looking at the greats of Scotland why now does nobody enter these races, maybe feart, whats your thoughts myself I think we have people capable of getting their names up there from 1,000+ mls
geordie1234 Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I've read about a lot about pigeons that have done 1000 plus into Scotland with great interest.. It can be done and as you see wee man there is guys capable off doing it
bullcock Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 When I start getting birds from Tours them Barcelona, why not,If Scotland had it's own wee group sending to Barcelona, this would be a very prestigious group, all birds home would be held in the highest regard.
geordie1234 Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Were would Scottish guys basket their doos for this?
bullcock Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Were would Scottish guys basket their doos for this?We would need to take them down into the nearest marking station in England, if enough went this could be a collective effort.
geordie1234 Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Could work well Is there not a few guys in the solway that have joined the NFC? As you say any doo that done Barcelona would be held with the highest regard.. would take a real hard and gutsy doo to do it what a buzz that'll be... Mind you I'll see how I do from the gold cup and tours this year

We man Posted January 10, 2014 Author Report Posted January 10, 2014 Were would Scottish guys basket their doos for this?Think there was talk last year of setting up a marking station in Scotland but due to lack of interest it never got going.
frank-123 Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Jamie & Richard Combe raced last year with the BICC and timed two from le mans 560 miles I am sure it will happen in the future where more fanciers will take part in these great clubs. Whether its as far as Barcelona not too sure.

Fair Play Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 There was also a 1000 mile club but don't know who from up here flew in it I was a member but never used it
clockman Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 There was also a 1000 mile club but don't know who from up here flew in it I was a member but never used it I did 1979-80 (Palamos)
Kyleakin Lofts Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 There are still around 5 members of the BBC who live in Scotland. I do not think any of them send to races. In the past there have been several Scottish fanciers who have entered and had birds return, just check the Squills Year Book.George Gauld (deceased) was the last I knew who flew, albeit BICC, and timed from Tours? in June? to be on their result. He used to single them up from Morecambe, I think Budgie Crawthorne's place.Last year the BBC opened a marking station in Carslisle in an attempt at being inclusive and fulfilling their name of British. What a buzz and I would love to savour it, but at the moment I've never had a bird officially past 240 miles. Their final race is from Bordeaux and would be well over 800 miles to me in Ayrshire around late July / early August, I think.
We man Posted January 10, 2014 Author Report Posted January 10, 2014 I did 1979-80 (Palamos)Good to know this, can you tell us where birds were marked etc if you don't mind and why this great club ceased to exist, must have been great days for you and total respect to you and your kind competing at the highest level.

Doos were marked at Perth railway station and sent down south, cant remember why it ceased to exist
peter pandy Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Doos were marked at Perth railway station and sent down south, cant remember why it ceased to exist I believe it was organised by Dave Smith of Dunning fame and collapsed when he had his serious car crash leaving him hospitalised for many months and nobody prepared to take up the reigns of the club.

Now that's Real Extreme distance yer talkin aboot and would be Extremely tuff also But I for one would sure have a crack at it come time and I bet I widna be the only one from up here in the North !!
JOHNSEE Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I believe it was organised by Dave Smith of Dunning fame and collapsed when he had his serious car crash leaving him hospitalised for many months and nobody prepared to take up the reigns of the club. think you are right,Dave Smith from Dunning in Perthshire was I think president and Jim Bruce was secretary, there were a few birds that flew Palomos....I think Bert Stewart from Carnoustie won it one year with "Bettys Delight" olso remember the one and only Jock Ellis from wellbank who was one of the first to time in a bird called "Endurance" this bird was later purchased by Jim Biss, and was later purchased back by Jock Ellis at auction.....cant remember why the I000 club folded my father and I sent one bird but that was the last we saw of him.......JBC/. In these days Jock Ellis even joined the B.I.C.C. so he could send a young bird to Rennes 586 miles he got it within a week...Jock was always and still is a very hard task master.

I know Dave sent a young bird to Rennes with a yearling ring as youngsters were barred from competing and won an Open position. The youngster was on its second flight and was named Dunning Sparrow. No darkies then..

JOHNSEE Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Barcelona to Peterhead would Roughly be aboot 1130 miles !! Now that's Real Extreme distance yer talkin aboot and would be Extremely tuff also But I for one would sure have a crack at it come time and I bet I widna be the only one from up here in the North !! send pigeons to that distance would play into the hands of those wishing to see pigeon racing banned,it has been tried but was unsucessful as a race, just look at the entry to the longest race with the S.N.F.C. a club that stands for long distance races.....the total number of birds sent is pityful to say the least.....I think thats why Jock Ellis called his red pied cock "ENDURANCE"...JBC/..
Blue Tooner Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Barcelona to Peterhead would Roughly be aboot 1130 miles !! I would have a go for sure. I havent missed a race, club, fed or national for several years now. I keep them to race, its the whole point of keeping racing pigeons is it not?
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 A picture of John Ellis' first pigeon he recorded from Palamos with the BBC in 1968-bred by Stuart Young A picture of Wellbank Endurance Twice Palamos-2nd Scotland,88th Open BBC and 1st Scotland,27th Open BBC,Winner of the BBC Gold Medal, Harkers Rosebowl, BBC trophy for furthest flying bird in race time(1044miles) and the Gordon Hare Cup.Endurance was an inbred grandson of Wellbank Pride-1st East Section,8th Open Rennes 1965
JOHNSEE Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I would have a go for sure. I havent missed a race, club, fed or national for several years now. I keep them to race, its the whole point of keeping racing pigeons is it not? your correct thats what we keep them for.....but the distance involved turns it from a race into a task beyond the limits of pigeon racing....remember races close at velocities below 400 y.m.m 1000 miles into this country is not possible in the alloted time,On the day birds are liberated they will fly their hearts out to get home on the day before nightfall, after racing all day they may not and probly not reached the english channel the next day, they still have 500/600 miles to go thats where they start to give, every hour, every mile, more start falling by the wayside, some may eventualy reach home but by that time their not racing pigeons their wrecks......dont get me wrong they are game birds but it would no longer be a race......JBC/.
