The time of year for Federation AGM's is upon us.Traditionally these meetings are ,in my experience fairly well attended and contentious matters can be settled and officials elected in a generally friendly if raucous atmosphere. However I sometimes hear suggestions that there should be postal vote for elections and other matters. Is it asking too much of members to attend once a year at a suitable venue or would a postal vote be fairer and more democratic.I would be interested in the views Pigeons Basically members on this subject.

IMO the majority of members do not attend their AGM for various usually very good reasons. Everyone is entitled to a vote, and to be free from peer-pressure. A postal vote gives all the members their say in the Organisation and the outcome will surely reflect the feeling of the membership and not just the few who turn up. It also removes the power from factional elements who turn up by the bus load to ensure the vote goes their way, an no other.

IMO a postal vote results in true Democracy , and will re-acquaint those on the top table with the true feeling of the membership.

I think postal vote should be accepted as i for one have problems with my health ,because you are disabled due to health problems a member shouldnt have to forfiet his right to cast his vote ,it has nothing to do with democracy its thinking of others not so able as your self ,and remember they pay there dues the same as everyone else.

I would say a huge majority of fanciers don't know what goes on behind the scenes e.g. costs, logistics. A postal vote on these could damage a Federation big time if not all the facts are known. At an AGM where only members present can vote at least propositions can be debated before a vote is taken.

Surely if you can have a postal vote to help elect your government then a surely a postal vote for your Fed can be allowed, personally I like to attend

You don't elect the government in a hall by a show of hands. Certain things have to be discussed before you can vote on them. Most federations cover a limited area and if members cant make the effort to attend they don't deserve the vote. A national club is different and it may be that certain things would be better decided by a postal vote rather than bus loads turning up to influence the vote. The problem with that is you may not know the full facts to allow you to make a decision

It is my personal opinion that matters on the agenda that require a change to the constitution of a club or fed should be done by a postal vote. All other matters arising should be voted on by those present at the meeting. Jmo though.

Phil I agree with you 100% about the postal vote but only for the race programme . I know of fanciers in my own fed that don't go to the AGM as they feel that if one of the bigger membered clubs want a race programme to go through they go heavy handed so they feel its a waste of time going .

Their are pros and cons in postal votes however in my opinion it would not work due to changes could be made with postal voting with the outcome that the officials would have to call an EGM with a proposal being unworkable. All proposals have to be debated and I am sure we have all seen Tom and Dick watching Harry and voting accordingly regardless of debate. In Government almost all voters are voting for the party not the individual which is why their are so many monkeys as MP's. As far as I am concerned if it is not broken why fix it.
