Mycostatin, nystatin to treat

and I am a firm believer that giving your birds an acidic drink -such as Osmonds enviroboost (or cider vinegar) acts as a preventative

many thanks for that, we give them cider vinegar, but i just wondered where i can buy nystatin from , vets ?

No mate,it's for canker, basically liquid metronidazole.

Don't know if it works on pigeon thrush, but I know flagyl is given to women to treat thrush.

lindsay is correct flagyl is for canker not thrush and because it contains an atibiotic it will inflame thrush potassium will cure the thrush then after a few days treat for canker as it seams to to follow thrush flagyl is for urine infections in humans and infections of the urinary tract i found this out by taking a pkt to my chemist hope this helps you m8

ps forgot to say if you want a natural cure put natural yogurt on your feeding or a large tablespoon full in the drinker but on the feed is better

garlic in the drinker will help prevent Candida as will cease treating blind with antibiotics. A harsh cure is 1/4 teaspoon (1.2mls) of copper sulphate to 4 pints of drinking water for 4 days, this takes the shine right of the pigeons so wouldn't recommend treatment during racing/breeding/moulting.

Always thought it was the other way round Ryan

no ryan antibiotics can cause thrush so if you already have it treat for thrush then canker then thrush again and that should clear it thats why lots of women get thrush after a course of antibiotics and are given nystan

Usually people who have a yeast problem with their pigeons have been using antibiotics. Just like humans the use of antibiotics can trigger a string of reactions which include a yeast problem. This is a major reason why I never use them. I know that Nystatine is recommended for the treatment of yeast but it is sometimes very slow to work and yes you are right you need a prescription to get it.

I use Lugols iodine at the rate of 5ml to a gallon of water twice a week and chopped fresh garlic in the drinkers every day which controls it. I have had people complain that their birds have canker because they can see something in the throat. I have often found that what they call canker is in fact yeast.

If you have a serious look at your loft ventilation and your birds' access to sunshine you will probably find that you will never have to worry about treating them with antibiotics again.

Birds with yeast problems rarely if ever win races and often get lost I find. Check your birds droppings and swabs regularly and only treat them when they have something wrong because strong medicines always have side effects as you should know from humans. The less strong medicines you give your pigeons the better it will be.
