sapper756 Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Through out the 2012 season, regularly fanciers posted on Basics about experienced/past winning birds being lost from various distances. It would be good to hear of Basics members experiences on this topic, ie, which good experienced/past winning doos have you lost, and where from? What had they achieved, before being lost? Also, any idea what happened? Thank You
andy Burgess Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 we lost 2 fed toppers last year and 2 this year ,all as youngsters .i know this can happen with ybs ,but they are a fairly new family .looking back i now have a plan for the future ,others bred the same way but not raced as heavy have topped the fed as yearlings .

andy Burgess Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 could it be Andy we ask too much from our young birds, and take them too far,i think more a case of too often ,rather than too far ,well in my case anyway.
THE FIFER Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 i think more a case of too often ,rather than too far ,well in my case anyway. at one time young bird racing was for training them for adulthood ,now it is racing,
andy Burgess Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 at one time young bird racing was for training them for adulthood ,now it is racing, very true , but i believe it can still be . depends on the fancier ,i do like to educate them , but also to compete ,it,s finding the balance which is the difficult part in my opinion.
THE FIFER Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 maybe we will get a few views on it andy
Michael J Burden Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Through out the 2012 season, regularly fanciers posted on Basics about experienced/past winning birds being lost from various distances. It would be good to hear of Basics members experiences on this topic, ie, which good experienced/past winning doos have you lost, and where from? What had they achieved, before being lost? Also, any idea what happened? Thank You In 1991 I won the section I at Pau NFC 660 odd miles. The cock was a two year old who was a Van wanroy cross Alfons Bauwens. He flew the young bird progam and then as a yearling every race up to 500 miles when he was timed on the day being beaten by a loft mate to be second club and 4th Fed. 1991 he won the section as I have said then the fllowing year I sent him back but it was a smash race and he failed to arrive until about one year later. He had been in someones stock shed and not oput fielding because he was in better condition than when I lost him. His name was Boris
Wiley Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 I lost a very good pigeon a few years back he was bred by Peter Rowland of Marlow, he took many cards but his best performances was 1st club 3rd federation 4th Open London North Road Combine Berwick, as a yearling, as a two year old he came out and won 1st Club, 1st Federation Peterborough. As I said he took many other cards apart from these two wins, and he also bred a pigeon called two face who was also a good pigeon but terrible trapper. As a three year old 2 weeks before the season started PJ was really on song, we let the birds out from around the loft and he was never to be seen again. All I can imagine is where my birds go on the run there is a gauntlet of wires, along river road so I can only put it down to that. Andy Burgess had a grandchild of PJ at one time and I believe it broke his Novice Status,
b.massey Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Yb racing is just training for me. Some don't even actually go on the transporter and only go with the local training van. 2011 marlbrough SNFC was the worst race for our loft. Send widowhood cocks that had 1st clubs and 2nd 4th 5th 17th federation leading up to the race and one of the birds was a 2008 cock with 8 1st clubs and 6 fedeartion tickets. Sadly lost them all!! Hopefully the good days will be good again as 2012 I won 4 old bird races with new birds! However take a while to build what once was team again! Shows what 1 race can do to a loft
Pigeon Thos Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Yb racing is just training for me. Shows what 1 race can do to a loft Strangely enough Brian, I was handling my YBs and Yearlings on Wednesday, marked down some thoughts, and went back into the house to look at my records tracing back the parentage. It was unbelievable the number of lines that stopped at SNFC Marlborough 2011. I lost 8 pigeons at that one race including 04 06 07 08 pigeons that had all scored at over 200 miles. Just shows the effect one bad race (for me at least) can have on years of breeding, if like me you don't have a stock section.
T_T Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 I think OB losses perhaps reflects on YB training, education. I know we can't account for BOP attacks and other hazzards that effect us but youngsters need work. This YB season once racing had started,I trained every week twice a week from 25mls and they were out twice a day. That's the training, exercise they had but half my team went every race through the YB programme down to Exeter 220mls and to which I think adding another 30mls is far enough for any baby. We start at 90mls which is also a big ask when a lot of clubs will kick off at about 60m/65mls. I have also found over the years that babies that don't complete the YB prgramme fully, are usually the first casualities the following year. I am satisfied with what I have ended up with and am already looking forward to a good OB season 2013.
geordie1234 Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 IMO when top winning CONSISTENT performers go a miss it is down too Bop, Wires etc I don't believe great pigeons just don't home. I know a man who was 5th open from 675 miles approx snfc and then lost from appleby as a trainer 70 miles? Baffling bearing on mind this pigeon had been singled up many many time 50 plus miles. Just too many dangers for pigeons I don't believe you need just great pigeons you need lucky pigeons too This is omo
fletch Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 06 was a fantastic cock for us who won us our clubs inland averages on his own flying against 300-400 birds in 2006 being clocked in every inland racehe was a 2004 pigeon as a yb he won then as a yearling he was rubbish till the last race were he won the club by 10 minsthen in 2006 he was magnificant is all i can say about him winning 3x 1st 3 x 2nds 1x 3rd 2x 4th then 2007 fled well again winning a few races and flying wellthen 2008 he won a few races againi bought a stock loft to put around my house to keep him in after 2008 season, he went to the last race of 2008 and after they were libbed the weather changed and the birds had a disaster he was the only bird who never came for us and hasnt been seen sincethe loss was so great that it was like losing a part of the family it made me sick as a dogi sometimes think he may return if someone has him in he only ever bred 2 cocks when breeding 1 his 1st every young bird and a latebreed 2007 and both won races but not as good as there dad, but they both in the stock loft and the latebreed 2007 cock is a absoloute gem of a breeder he has breed our good cock in race loft now and bred a yb that won us £600 this year in the breeder buyer race and both his yb won this year
ALF Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 at one time young bird racing was for training them for adulthood ,now it is racing, Not too bothered about yb racing now myself Archie for the last couple of years i huvnae set a clock but get just as much enjoyment from seeing my yb's coming home from whatever race mate
WulDon Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 fed topper awol of the loft this year! my hen that won 61st Open SNFC Clermont 541 miles in 2011, was lost at 90 miles this season! :(
dal2 Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Wee bit of a daft subject I think!!! You will always loose top pigeons because you want to win races with them and lots of hazards to negotiate????
