BE GOOD TO HEAR HOW PEOPLE TREAT THEM GOING INTO THE 1ST RACE AND HOW FAR THEY HAVE TOSSED THEM?

I'd always race them widowhood first race and send them as calm as possible I find leaving the birds with the hens upto 2 hours to be best for the early races

Our first race is a week on Saturday, as yet no training, but birds are flying well both morning and evening around the loft. All youngsters are now weaned, naturals sitting eggs, I plan to split the widowers this weekend. Hopefully get a toss very soon.http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

Had a dozen tosses mostly from carnwath to greengairs , but had a stinker from around 10mls but they are still coming so only 4 down (was 9). the cocks handled the cold winds better than the hens seemed to. but will only send 6 on sat as not sure we will get a race .

We fly in ayrshire we have had 6 tosses one from about 10miles then up 20miles for 2 tosses and had 3 from 25miles a lot of our birds are broken bird so we have dropped a few but what left is the ones we had hope to keep so looking forward to saturday we are from lockerbie about 60 miles or so to us but will be very surprise if we get a early lib as weather is to be heavy rain so we wont be putting the full team out, But will be good to get them there as thats why we feed them through the winter :animatedpigeons:

we are in to our second race but for the first one of 98 miles they had 3 tosses ,2 short ones and 1 from 20 miles, had 100% returns and as for flagging I would never dream of flagging birds at the start of the season but that is only my opinion

Things are different here this year. The birds have been split since 8th April, the hens have been doing an hour+ unforced for the last week, most of them have good race experience so these will go straight into the first race on Saturday (65 miles) without any training.

Which is just as well because training opportunities for me have been few - weather has been yucky most times I've been off work.

I've 4 untrained yearling latebreds, 3 x 2-yo latebreds with limited race experience, 1 x 2-yo unraced after hit by peregrine during early stage of her training last year, and a 3-yo cock recently broken from a loft 500 yards away - and it's these birds I've concentrated my training on. Started at 20 miles on Sunday, 3-yo went back to old loft & yearling latebred missing for hours. I was working Mon & Tue and used time away from loft to do a bit of tweaking. Away with same birds yesterday to 28 miles and all home together. Hoping to go 40 miles some time today when its a bit warmer - its freezing just now.

My cocks are a different story; other than the 3 I'm training, I can't get them to pass the hens' end and go out to exercise. So training basket for them , probably from tomorrow. Just a couple should do it. So doubt if I'll get my cocks anywhere near ready till next week's race.

Why is this tammy? Do you feel it's too much to ask f the bird when there is a long season to go?

,yes, that is my way of thinking,it is a long season and the birds are flying freely for at least an hour each time they are out so I will start flagging them a good bit later on when I feel they need it but once racing is under way and they have had a race or two they will have a bit of fitness about them anyway

Posted

Been flagging an hour morning and night for a week now and had 1 toss fae Lanark Racecourse, about 12/14 miles to me, though they are not the doos i will send this week as they were mostly yearlings first time in the basket, hope to have them on song for race 3 or 4 depending on the work i get into them.

Separated 9 hens from their ck's about 10 days ago and its the best conditioned of they Ck's that will be going tomorrow night in the hope i get a decent time in.

Met office and BBC are showing North east 6 mph winds and like Brian says XC are telling us it will be west south/west 6mph. They dont seem to know so we dont have a hope in hell knowing.

Best of luck to all.

They will be liberated at 12.00 on Saturday, take your camcorder and post up on Basics for its lanarkshire fanciers, I will give you a tenna to go towards your fuel...lol

It would be good to see good footage of a lanarkshire lib with 5,000 to 8,000 birds.
