Who pairs up early (early as in early December)

Need some tips on pairing up early - and does it mean the youngsters will be on natural darkness and not go through the moult like later bred natural youngsters

If possible extend the daylight hours artificially for a couple of weeks before you intend to pair.Make sure the hens aren't too heavy and use wheatgerm oil on the feed.

The youngsters will be on Natural darkness but I still think they would throw flights as normal :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I usually pair up the second sat in december no matter what the weather.Everything going to plan youngsters are split end of jan beginning of feb. They are put on to the darkness 18.00 to 9.00 am till the mid of june , They will go through a full body moult but should not drop flights. I also feed a high protien young bird mix till training starts .

Was told if you pair up early December you don't need to put youngsters on darkness - and that they will hold their flights as if they had been on darkness - would like to know who practices this method AND if the youngsters DO hold their flights

DID THIS 2 YEARS AGO AND THE Y/BS MOSTLY HELD FROM 3 TO 5 FLIGHTS

TILL AFTER THE Y/BN AT THE START OF SEPTEMBER

SOME DID HAVE TO BE STOPPED A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THIS THOUGH

THEY WERE HATCHED IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS IN JANUARY

ANY LATER BRED ONES DIDNT LAST AS LONG ON THE FLIGHTS

Agree.

I breed two lots of 30 babies, one rung early in january,. The first lot are left natural and the second dark. 90% of time the first round out perform the darkies!!!!! only the odd one out of the bunch. This year I am givin the dark a miss!

System X describes how it is done, was a system which ronnie bigwood passed onto derek nichols supposedly. He states they will moult flights, but the constant heavy workload will slow the wing moult down. Myself i am looking to follow this system this season for a change to see how it goes as i dont want to be darkening and undarkening due to the hours i work

if you intend to pair early start your prep now with the old birds get the loft and all the essentials ready as if it snows things take that much longer to do.

i try to get as much prepwork done as possible and that includes innoculation one droping, worming and cleaning out the loft ---spraying out and repainting inside .when i put the sexes together i put deep litter on the floor ,i use coconut nest felts and straw[medicated].

young birds are parted straight onto the dark till late june-works for me.

Why pair in December then put them on dark till June. Is it to benefit the old birds? I know a lot of successful fanciers who pair early February and darken till June.

I was told by a good yb darkness flyer that pairing them any earlier than Jan / Feb is just a waste of feeding ,as for flights i always was happiest when they throw 2 flights together on both wings prior to basketing for the main event ,then they are really on song ,Yb darkness cock that did this was 2nd section national ,and a blue hen i had threw 2 flights each year for 3 years prior to basketing for the gold cup 500 miles always clocked on the day up to 16 hours on the wing NW wind and always 7000 plus birds behind her ,everyone to there own but for me the more they throw the better ,good luck :emoticon-0157-sun:
