As i look to embark on my first breeding season after a few minor glitches(letting all my cocks oot the door :emoticon-0136-giggle: ) what feed do you use and do you leave food constantly there for them or is it like ybs when they have there feed in the morning the feeder is taking out?

This year i am using Versa Laga breeding extra, and i feed morning&evening as much as they like for an hour. Drinkers are rinsed and replenished at feeding times, Grit and minerals in front of them all the time.

I'm on the new versa-laga breed/race mix with a few beens and poultry layers pellets added.A handfull of pickstone twice a day same with matrix and grit. They've just been cankered followed by probiotics, should be hatching this mo. and the rest of the week.

After years of watching birds leave various grains in commercial mixes, this will be my second full year of mixing my own. My breeding mix is beans, maples, tares, maize, wheat and hormoform fed in a pot in the nest box. I re-fill it twice-a-day, so theere's food before them all the time.

I,ve starting to use Bamfords Topflight Breed and Wean this year whilst breeding. Also Bamfords Topflight Allrounder. I also give them Matrix everyday and Redstone grit. They also get Cider vinegar 3 times a week in their water.

When breeding look for a mixture with a little maize and no barley. Avoid mixtures which contain crinkled maples/peas, dust and weevils (noticeable bore holes in grains).

I got mine from Gibbs of Galston where we get a club discount. I think £11 is reasonably priced.Where do you get your feeding from?

thanks for your reply, i was paying £9 a bag last year as i ordered in bulk from a local supplyer but i do get it delivered in with the price so as you say maybe price is reasonable.

why no barley ? it`s very important to the young !!

A couple of reasons, the main one being the pointed ends can easily damage the inside of the youngsters mouth/throat when its being pumped into them. The other is pigeons given the choice wont eat it.
