Delboy Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 good fanciers in all sections of SNFC, postcode means alot when flying with SNFC. Whos to say that if you had a top Ayrshire fancier in the east of the country, that they wouldnt be winning top honours. I know a guy that went from Glasgow to Duns and couldnt fail at the nationals. When he moved back to Glasgow, he became mediocre again, struggling to get a time in again.I dont think you can single any fancier out as being the best when their are so many disadvantaged areas to fly into.
Guest Paulo Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 was talking to my dad about Henry Mair last night he reckons he's been flogging them for ages and it was a joke even when he was flying in the 70's - 90's. Knows a few people who brought then and they were utter rubbish
Merlin Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Jim Donaldson is surely one of the many greats for a number of years, and as a bonus his lines are also winning and crossing well for many many other fanciers all over.
b.massey Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Think Jim Donaldson for me. I live near Edinburgh and to think just how far they have to go from me is incredible. They prob give me a wave as they pass over. They try and inform me mines are still at race point lol :)
Guest asha Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 I think your being a little hard on H Mair, who to be fair had the bottle to send Lionheart 1,000miles and gave a sizeable chunk of the money paid to him by jim Biss who bought him,to charity. Seems pretty obvious the standard of the scottish birds should be at least the same standard as those far off days, but the scottish fanciers seem to have lost their way, possible the outcome of the imported sprint mentality of this generation. There seems to be a good few scotch distance lads on this forum, why don`t you try to reform the 1,000 mile club with the BBC,could well be heart breaking races, but the glory that awaits a 1,000 pigeon would prove beyond doubt you have the best in the world.
Roland Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 geoff kirkland up to 500 mile won 8 or nationals :-/ You mean he raced against the Scots... then they must estimate when and if the Scotish birds stayed with Geoff's birds, and just when they parted company. ;D ;D geoff kirkland up to 500 mile , he,s won about 8 nationals at least brian denney , chris gordon , for consistant ly allways there over 650 mile and for scotland i would go for dennis dall , could be wrong ther,s so many to choose from

The blokes selling birds on the back off performances thats taken places years ago. Full credit to him he has had a bird that has done a 1000 mile race back in the dark ages but would it have won out of bourges at 560? How have the birds been tested since he stopped racing years ago? What new blood has he brought in. The whole familly of them will prob be inbred skemmies was talking to one lad on here and he brought 10 and lost the lot training. One 1000 mile pigeon that he sold anyway doesn't make a successful long distance familly. Most long distance racing in the UK in general fed and club racing is to 560 mark. So called sprint pigeons like the busschaerts will score from 100 - 560 miles those are the birds you want general purpose birds. How many 1000 mile races do we have in the UK you've been reading Jim Emertons column in the BHW too much. I'd love to do so called marathon racing and internationals but the reality of it is the logistics are totally against it if you live in the north of england. Dunno about scotland but I'm guessing its the same as the North where the hell do you take the birds to get marked leeds or sheffield sorry too far. You seem to love whining on about sprint mentality etc I enjoy distance races a lot. Admittly I'm sh** at them at the minute because it was only my first season old bird racing this year but I hope to get better. Sprint and middle distance form the majority of the race programme so for fanciers who want to be "top men'' and win the averages and more tnan 2 - 3 races a year most people have to be all rounders as well. Sprint pigeon racing is an art just like long distance racing and require different skillsets in relation to the feeding etc. My dad was class at channel racing but was sh** at sprint. I'm good at sprint and aim to be good at channel as well. All rounders is what you want. Out of interest how many sprint races have you won this year? You really hate foreign strains don't you lol What breeds do you keep then? Some old british strain that is slow as f@ck and can only win on a hard day! Theres two types of pigeons good ones and bad ones. Strain doesn't matter its a mans names. Cross is where you get your racers from all this inbred familly sh** is rubbish. Every time I've seen people inbreed their birds too much they have gone rubbish. In belgium they couldn't give a monkeys about strain or pedigree its all performance which is how it should be. Tell you what I might do as a test buy four off him and put them against the four I'm going to breed off the birds I have got from John Mckeown and see whats left in two years time! I'd rather have one Lodge Star thats topped the UNC from Bourges against a large birdage than 4 lionhearts thats won 1000 mile race. How many birds did this lionheart beat? Anyone know how much Henry charges?
Guest youngzimmy Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 ronnie williamson ireland rated the best doo man in europe

I doubt if the pigeon Lionheart was sold for a great deal of money and would like to see proof of the charitable donation. As far as I can remember the pigeon took a long while to return. Not the type of pigeon we would be likely to time from 500-700 miles. I believe a club mate of Henry a Mr. Alan Raeside also of Irvine actually held the 1000 mile record into Scotland. His pigeon was called Conqueror I believe. As I said previously I was visited by a Japanese fancier who was in the country on business. He imported knitwear from the borders to Japan. I was advised by Henry's friend who accompanied the party to sell to them and take plenty of money from them as Henry had done so. I only had one real quality hen at the time and would not sell her. As the Japanese guests prepared to leave I asked them if they would like to use the toilet before they continued their journey. In response to this offer their faces lit up as they were absolutely desperate for the toilet and would not ask. They had not even been offered the courtesy of a visit to the toilet in Irvine. They continued their journey to visit Jim Hannah. I advised them that he had quality birds. Whether or not they bought any I don't know. The SNRPC actually linked up with the NFC to encourage longer distance racing into Scotland from Saintes. A few brave fanciers gave it a go and a few brave pigeons returned. I doubt if many lofts would house the homer required to fly from 1000 miles. In my opinion there is a fine line between distance racing and downright cruelty.
Guest slugmonkey Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 I dont know why Jim Biss has not been mentioned more we have a guy in our club winning with his birds what of Paul Partridge ??
Guest spin cycle Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 I dont know why Jim Biss has not been mentioned more we have a guy in our club winning with his birds what of Paul Partridge ?? possibly 'cos he flew into norfolk rather than scotland ?

Delboy Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 The late Jock Allan was the best distance flier in west section. Unbelievable record at Gold Cup and still his birds are winning today.

alec guinness Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 The late Jock Allan was the best distance flier in west section. Unbelievable record at Gold Cup and still his birds are winning today. got to agree jock allans gold cup record was second to none,i dont think this fanciers performances were fully heighlighted,70,s & 80,s fantastic.
Guest asha Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Hi Novice, lionheart was sold to mr Biss for £1,000 and mr mair gave £100 of it directly to FWS HALL,who documented the said act,and as the legendary Frank Hall`s integrity was beyond reproach,i think it disgraceful to blemish this mans reputation,i expect you do not even know mr hall, the auctions for charity he made, his work with the media on TV work, and Films. And his wonderful hallmark family off northroad racers in London, let alone the books he wrote, and decads of articals he penned for the Racing Pigeon weekly, and Pictorial. As for you not knowing when lionheart returned, perhaps you should have found out before your ill timed outburst, you are right about mr reasides Conqueror, but you do not even know the vel,do you,or if he made the return trip do you,or the other great birds at that time.If you only knew which1,000 mile birds,in turn bred a pigeon that raced 1,000 miles you would understand this thread, but you do not,or if your the man i think you are,you might well do.
