greenlands Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Haven't had them out for a while, the peregrine hen goes over regular, nothing worse especially when your down to nestbox accomodation and end up with spare cocks or hens.
Novice Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I seem to be relatively hawk free at the moment. Which is both good and bad news. Bad news as I am part of the SHU Sparrowhawk survey and it would have been good to report a few attacks.
just ask me Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 nottin goes over mine have that problem solved ;)
Guest kev d Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 had my hens out for a fly yesterday had 1 come back with half its wing missing and lost a 3 year old hen obviously hawked just wandering if anybody else is getting bother im sick whats the point of feeding the hawks , keep the pigeons in it wount hurt them whats the point of stressing your self out we do enough of that in the racing season . cheers kev d
PATTY BHOY Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 seem to be alot of buzzards down my way.
greenlands Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 seem to be alot of buzzards down my way. Must be at least six or more round here, they don't bother the birds infact i think they keep the killers away.
Jumbo Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Had my cocks out for the 1st time since September a couple of days ago and ended up 2 cocks down ,they were well raced as youngsters. That's the team smaller even before thinking about racing.
ALF Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I learned a while ago that it pays to keep them locked up during the winter as i was losing too many of them to Percy/Sparrowhawks!!! But it wont happen again not during the winter months!!
Ian McKay Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I am the same as a lot of you I do not let the birds out during the winter as I do not want to feed the predators If they are not getting fed they will soon move on After all if you went to Kentucky fry or burger king and they were shut how long would it take for the penny to drop you are going home hungry
newbold Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 i use a owl on top of loft and i know you will all say it dosent work, but i havent had any attacks since i put it on roof ov loft. yet other fancyers on allotments have had trouble with hawks, and i tell them to get one ov theys owls they just give me a funny look at £5 quid and no attacks they can look all they like p s my birds go out as much as possible
cowman Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 i let my birds out 2 days ago ten left the loft flew for 1 hr around the loft went off then 1 hr later came back 2 down well i`m now left with 8 birds for the old bird racing next year so nothing else going out till training starts .
newbold Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 i have bean watching a dvd and the belg s use a plastik pop bottel painted white with slit in side then a white boared of wood plased in the slit and paint 2 eyes on it,they swear by it
les Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 all deterents are crap ,other wise we would all be using the same thing that was proved to work 100 percent ,only things that kill are 100 percent proven fact ,and if you are still leting you birds out in the winter then we should all thank you for helping the hawks to survive untill we start the season then you are contributing to the death of our birds ,[thank you very mutch] why moan about it you caused it .

Guest Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Lost a late bred the other day to the sparrow hawk at the loft, but they have to get out. :(
hotrod Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 i think im one of the lucky ones ,hope im not tempting fate hear, ive never been bothered with sparrowhawks yet my pal 1/4 mile away gets hit all the time,my theory is i always have my german shepperd dog out the back when birds are out so when the sparra comes along it sees the dog and leaves them alone, because if it hits a bird in the garden the dog might get it .my birds are out most days
Guest marksimpson Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 why are you leting them out then just let them out now and then for some exercize i also get cramps or need a bath now and then yours in sport mark
les Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 just let them out now and then for some exercize i also get cramps or need a bath now and then yours in sport markthen you are just going to have to learn to live with any losses you get ,untill you have had enough.ATB les.
cemetary Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 I have had a plastic owl erected on my avery for a few years now, i took it down one day to get the hut painted, the stock birds were out in the avery at the time, i came in the house for a cup, heard all the fluttering from the stock doos, looked out the window and the hen was sitting on top of the avery looking in at the birds. The owl was put back up, and touch wood i havent seen it since, i also have the radio playing when the birds are out, dont no if that makes any difference or not, but havent had any problems so far, so there is something working.
