Guest Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 looking for good advice on the following . i have 3 candidates for an important open race 2 cocks and 1 hen ,the hen was my favourite for this race. having just checked her over she is about to lay (first egg) ,basketing tommorow . race is 211 mile to my loft .she has been rung especially for this race ,whats the best to do ? would she return if sent ? race is thursday . andy.
Novice Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I'm no expert at telling if a bird is about to lay but if there is a doubt I would leave her at home especially a youngster
BANDIT Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 IF YOU VALUE HER DONT SEND HER, A HEN OF MINE LAYED ON TUESDAY AND THEN AGAIN ON THURSDAY, SENT HER SATURDAY AND SHE WON,YOUR HEN LAYED TO LATE AND SHE WILL LAY AGAIN WHEN SHE IS AWAY.
phillips Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 is 1 ov the cocks thats going paired to her andy if so he will race his heart out to get back to fertalize the second egg if it was my hen i wouldnt send it mate if shes showing good signs now she will be beeter as a yearling treated right

Guest Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 thanks for replies so far . i will race widowhood cocks only next year. she has not yet layed ,but is about to ,if no egg in the morning she will definetly stay . another cock paired to her not a candidate for this race . andy.
billt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Egg laying not an illness but takes a lot of nutrients out of the body, not the best condition for racing
Guest Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Is it for a gold ring race Andy???it is , the bird was bred specially for this race . 6 rung with gold rings .1.lost training ,1 racing , 1 to the hawk . 3 candidates left . i will be gutted if she cant go , but do not want to throw her away but be fair .was also hoping this may give me an advantage ?? andy.

Guest Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 leave the hen at home if she lays lift the egg before the cock sees it send him on the point of lay you wont need the hen (this is for old birds but can be used on y/bird but chancy might get them to excited ) your choice
billt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 yeh peter. j front door would've been great ;D ;D ;D
JADE Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 if she was specially for this race why have her due to lay the day b4 marking. if she has laid tonite she will lay 2nd egg on thursday so will have to stop on way home unless liberated early. i never send hens unless they have laid 2nd egg 2 days b4 marking. keep her at home

REDCHEQHEN Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 You've already made your mind up Andy - but I wouldn't send her we left 2 young hens out of Saturdays race as they were eggy - having split the youngsters mid week - hoping the rest of the season the hens would then be OK - now the hens are all pairing up to each other - so still not 'safe' for future races
big blue bar Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 i was in same boat last friday was racing three hens but had to leave them at home because they were due to lay it s not worth throwing birds away keep them for the next week
