greenlands Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Over the past few weeks there have been some cracking pigeons on site for sale, most of which I would have jumped at when I had a wage coming in.Like most fanciers these days money is limited, especially if you have a young family, buying your house or just out of luck and the back pockets took some hammering.Like some of the elder fanciers I have been living on a pension since 2002 and I can tell you ,you have to tighten your belt nearly upto te last hole to make ends meet. Please don't get me wrong I'm not knocking anyone who's selling birds and I'm not on the poverty line,it's just the way things have gone over the years, maybe some of you lads and lasses have a different opinion to me .What do you think ? are some over the top ,what's your opinion of a resonably priced bird even a kit of six . Lindsay.
showman Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Hi Lindsay After much thought these past few months, I am thinking about a return to racing pigeons again......with new loft, birds etc. having to be purchased. I was made redundant back in February this year, and the cost of my return scares me a lot !! Not too bad when it comes to a loft, as I will build this myself, but when it comes to birds....oh boy...that's something else !! I have it in my ind to try the Dordins, Sions or similar as these were the families I was brought up with, and I also like a showy looking pigeon too. A mate phoned me yesterday and said there were Dordins in the BHW at £50.00 a pop.....and whereas a few months ago I wouldn't have thought twice about it......but now I can't see that happening !! Like yourself, I won't deny the birds are probably worth it....but the cost of getting new stock is very, very worrying, plus the fact you don't want to appear like 'Lipton's Orphan' when you go to buy stock !!
sammy Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 good post lindsay ,me personally i dont think any pigeons is worth more than 60 quid as i have to work hard to make that for a days wage and then pay tax of it as well
BLACK W F Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 well lindsay a bird is only worth what the buyer wants to pay the prices arnt sky high being asked but if your out of work they can look like they are some of the best birds i ever owned where gifts from friends and swaps so you dont have to pay fortunes to get good quality birds cheers Alan
pearse1888 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 aye some people on here looking for crazy prices for pigeons .. i enquired about a few pigeons now and then and some of the prices people have said nearly made me fall of the chair :-/
kirky Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 good post lindsay ,me personally i dont think any pigeons is worth more than 60 quid as i have to work hard to make that for a days wage and then pay tax of it as well i agree £50-£60 is enough to pay for a stock bird & £100 for a kit of 6 ybs thats all i sold mine for this year & will be the same next year.
Guest rodders Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 i sell ybs off my race team at £15 a bird as i dont breed off racers to race as only small set up and i get more than enuff to race with just 1 round off stock birds which i have been lucky enuff to build up by circling pigeon sites and buying bargains like the other night when i got jeremys bird for only £35 i thought it was worth more but as said earlier when you are on a budget you have to factor in couriers costs so really its gonna cost me £65 but still worth it in my opinion
Guest bakes Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 would love to pay some of the prices that people bidded on here or at auctions im a 23 year old lad lives with my misses what money i earn from work and my partner earns go onto bills we have a little amount of money to last us the month out thats why when i do manage to get hold of a good bird im always happy but if i didnt put money aside each month to aquire new stock i would no way afford the prices that people wont for there birds they have put up for sale all the best
greenlands Posted October 18, 2009 Author Report Posted October 18, 2009 Hi Rodders , I thought that was a bagain,as you say courier prices on top knocks the edge off it a bit,but still a cracking bird at that .Hope it does well for you mate. Lindsay.
weecunny Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 they only worth what u think u would pay

Guest kev d Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 i gave 12 yb away last season to 2 different people and i made 2 new friends by doing so i know i havent got any world beaters but the birds did well for both of them they kept me up dated with there progress one yb went on to fly a very hard talbenny back to belfast for one of them when many birds nighted out . try it it,s very rewarding and you make friends . cheers kev
Guest rodders Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 use to give them away locally but was costing me to much money when they kept beating me with my own birds gave some to a couple of lads in derbyshire last year who were starting up but havnt heard much as they had probs after one of their wifes bought them a few from a stud as a present and every thing went tits up
Guest strapper Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 the price of a pigeon is based on supply and demand...the breeder supplys and what the buyer pays is determined by how many fanciers want the bird. ie auction. when a set price is given then its up to the buyer to reach that price or...wait around for a similar bird cheaper.
john@formula 1 lofts Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Cheers Bakes and Eastcoaster
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 i think you have to stay within your budget this is only a hobby but then saying that ive started to put together a really good team of de meyers and last winter i spent 600 pounds on one bird and this winter so far ive spent 1000 pounds on one bird . but i live sleep and dream about pigeons . i dont go out drinking or wasteing money down the pub my spare money i save and just buy pigeons with its what i enjoy doing lol
Guest strapper Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 rarely do i buy pigeons ,b4 starting back up i spent no more than £50 on a pigeon...thats the only one at that price...i couldnt afford to buy and buy so i played the hand i was dealt and it worked out for me because i was averages winner in my club 3years running and also fed topping along the way..i believe working under the restraints i had ,helped me to become a better flyer than i would have become if i had bought and bought...but then again..maybe not one thing ...ive never been totally devoted to pigeon racing..but done my fair share of winning. since starting back up in 2006 , ive spent more than i thought i would have, but not silly money.
just ask me Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 although money can help no doubt what i enjoy doing is looking at results as much as i can and try to find a fancier living in a bad location with results if u can get to them early enough there are some bargains to be had before the money boys come in some times ive left it to late and have had to pay bigger than what i taught
blaz Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 i gave birds away in 2005 to a guy i know i had not spent a lot of money at all building my team up to produce these birds .he took them and said thanks he also said he was getting birds from jo bloggs he told me jo had spent thousands of£s buy these birds in . i told him to keep birds separate .just to see which is better . over 2 years later i got some of mine back of their own accord.when i asked which was the better he said mine. alot of my birds now and back then where from friends as gift birds.that is what made them that bit better .as i and no doubt you would not give crap birds to a mate.it also shows you dont need to spend lots of cash buying birds in.
Tony C Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 On a limited budget the best way is to obtain latebreds, the demand for y/birds at that time of year is at its lowest hence lower prices.

This is when I would get some, what I would like to see is members doing something like a Mac 1 swop, exchanging late breds ,each person pay half the courier fee, half on pickup the remainder on delivery, like this u can improve your birds with only the price of about £20.00. not bad if it could work [ :)JMO]
