Googlebot follows links from all over the internet, if someone has linked our forum then he can follow that link onto the forum; as every page on the internet has links googlebots work is never done If lots of people link our page googlebot recongnises that this page is quite popular which will be reflected in the 'page rank' given for that page, which ultimately decideds who goes to the top of the search results on google.

Server Changeover
Webmaster replied to Webmaster's topic in Website News, Views & Computer Related Info
OK think I've got the changeover sorted. If anyone gets any errors anywhere in the site please let me know the page. Richard -
I've had an email from a nonfancier reporting a lost yearling in Southampton. If anyone is, or knows someone from around that area, could they get in contact with me to collect the bird; as the usual avenues to report strays in her words 'they dont really want to know' - which doesnt reflect well on fanciers or the pigeon sport. Thanks Richard

I think possibly some have missed the point of the first posting. Dont let us cover old ground here

Hello! Within the next couple of days (maybe read nights ) Pigeonbasics will be moving to new servers. This will only effect you if you try to access the website during the changeover (should be covered within a 2 or 3 hour period). I'm busy moving all the bits and pieces across just now so that it will be as seamless as possible; however with different setups there could be some glitches, if you notice any errors (not the CGI error ) please let me know. The mini-site admin and also the forum will be down for a little longer than the rest of the site but will be available again as soon as possible (maybe an hour longer than the rest of the site). I have the details of the competition to go onto the website (about time I know : and these will be added once we have settled in to our new home. I am aiming to do it at the least busy time for the site (night GMT), so the changeover doesnt effect too many people. Richard P.S. Please bear in mind that my email will also be down during the changeover.

Hello! As a result of the forum expanding as it has (more than 150 posts posted each day now) I feel it is time to expand our moderation team. In the past my thought has been to do it myself and try and keep an even hand over all aspects of the moderation, however there comes a time that it is not practical or possible for me to be reading every posting, every day - if not sometimes needed sooner. I will soon be contacting a few of our senior members (been with the site a long time/have posted quality consistently - nothing to do with age ) to become moderators. This doesn't involve anything out of the ordinary if you are asked to participate; you can still view the forum as much or as little as you did before and there is no obligation to read every topic. The moderation bit comes in only when you come across a 'problematic' post (help advice and details given) which you will be able to deal with. I feel with a team of trusted members from the forum checking aspects of the forum, an almost 24/7 coverage will be achieved, and hope that this may lead to nipping some of the problems in the bud. As I said, there is no obligation if you are a moderator to be tied to the website, and you don't just need to think it's about the forum; I'll hopefully be running ideas and new features for Pigeonbasics past moderators first, and other areas of administration may be requested. One thing I don't want is for anyone to have a gripe at who are moderators, because I hope that there will be a wide cross-section of the fancy; therefore I will not be publishing any list of names. And indeed I hope the team of moderators does not need to do any moderating, however they will be there as a safeguard. If you don't get a message to become a moderator, but think you have what it takes, please contact me via the usual details; however I will be inviting people to be part of the moderation team as a matter of course from now on in, this isn't a one off appointment; so stick in, keep posting, and you'll be noticed . Any questions, you know what to do. Richard

I think this comes under Tweaks Just rearranged the forum a little. - Ring Collecting became part of the main forum category. - Competitions subform was setup and Pigeonbasics Race and the 200 Mile Challenge posts were moved to there (with scope to add more with future competitions). Not sure if I've got it 100% how I'd like it yet, but I think its a wee bit better Richard

I've reorganised. This thread has been moved to here by Webmaster.

When you catch the bird (good luck ) you may find that its owner has stampped their details onto one of the wing feathers; which can be checked by carefully opening one wing at a time to check the longer flight feathers. All the best Richard

Its going to be a close game, which could go either way. Find out the score by watching BBC1 tomorrow 15:00.

STRANGE MESSAGE
Webmaster replied to PIGEON_MAN's topic in Website News, Views & Computer Related Info
Hi, I couldnt get on dinner-time-ish, so changed something around which caused the 'Software Error' - oops :-/ Fixed that back now, but we still may get the 'CGI-Limits' error intermittantly for the next week or so. I wasnt aware we had soo many visitors during the day, in the short time I'd made the mistake for the software error I had a number sms texts, and also double figure emails; thanks guys for letting me know To fix the CGI-Limits error (which is why it may take a week, or at least a few days) I am moving the website to a new host machine, which will require me transfering all the data more-or-less manually to the new machine. This I will be doing while the site is still hosted where it is (thus may get the error), and only when everything is moved and setup in our new location I will move the address to where the domain (pigeonbasics.com) points to. This hopefully will give us the least downtime while we switch. Thats the latest, will let you know how its going after the weekend. Richard Edit: Will be posting updates here. -
This isn't what the website is about and won't be tolerated, however I'm not in a position to moderate every posting 24 hours a day 7 days a week, however it will be dealt with as soon as it is possible for me to do so. Linda, please have no hard feelings towards 99% of us on here, or what we are all about. I would very much like to see you back with us on the forum here, but respect your decision if otherwise. If anyone encounters a posting for which they find offensive, please report it to me, or continue browsing elsewhere - don't let the situation escalate. I do my utmost to remove obviously inappropriate postings as soon as I see them, however I require a little cooperation from those willing to help me out a bit in pointing me to a specific problem or posting - as I don't get time to read every post, every day. I have sent a message to the person(s) responsible in this case, and await an adequate reply. Lets draw a line under this and get back to the pigeons Richard

Thanks Mick. If anyone else has photos of liberations or liberation sites please post them up; will make the directory of liberation sites at http://www.pigeonbasics.com/liberationweather/ bigger and better If you want to send a video please email it to me and I'll compress it for the internet and post if up here on the forum. Richard

Well I've decided its going to be my birds again this year, however I dont know if we get to the final race (going to be away). I took the photos of the birds the other day, I'll get the competition pages sorted over the weekend. The way it will be run this year is going to be slightly different. I have two teams of young birds, the darkness, and the later bred naturals. Each syndicate will consist of 5 darkness, and 2 naturals (to be known as the substitutes - football theme see later ). The natural team however will not receive as many races - possibly only the single one - but their points will be added to a syndicate in the usual way. Rather than the birds being known by their 'id number' - pretty boring - this year each will be given a name, they are going to be named after players in the world cup (come on England ). Prizes will be available for young fanciers only, but everyone else can play 'for fun'. Details; as well as being posted on the website, will be sent to the British Homing World and appear in my column 'Youn Fanciers Forum'. Think thats about it for now,,, I just wish there was 30 hours in each day :) Richard
