Strange year for them with us, they were late arriving and only 4pairs nested with us in the buildings, usually about 10 pairs so it's been quiet here. One pair had youngsters in the nest in October last year and all reared, They've been gone from here for at least 3 weeks. We always had a pair of House Martins nest on the house but they never returned this year. For some reason they always gather here before leaving, we had more than a hundred sunning on the roof, they stay for a couple of days then they're gone

I think some birds go down on race day for whatever reason and go into survival mode but given the right conditions they can revert to homing mode, you'll notice how many turn up on following race days when obviously caught up by the days race
