No doubt the news reports of the Godolphin horses being found to contain anabolic steroids has shocked the horse racing world but will they affect racing pigeons. It has been a subject brought to our attention many times in the past and has always came to the same conclusion that enhancing drugs would be passed out of a pigeon quickly and would not be subject to testing results plus distance pigeons are away from the loft 3-4 days and could not give an unfair advantage in flight. If I may I will report what I have found as no doubt some on the forum will now already be aware off. Ethylestrenol and Stanozolol were one of the two drugs found which are Anabolic Steroids in the Godolphin horses, They increase the size of the muscle cells meaning they can run faster and longer, The effects last longer than the drug does within the system so they are long term performance enhancers and we thought drugs would pass through their system quickly.

It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations. Sir Winston Churchill.

178 Posts have been typed when all that was required was for any official of the SNFC to either update the SNFC web site regarding the transportation of our birds or post an official statement on forums. Tranparency is not in the SNFC vocabulary to my mind.

You may only be 22 however you definately speak more sense than the majority on this forum but diplomacy definately comes with age ! ask John Quine for advice LOL

So what your saying is a private haulage company rents Fife transporter and enters a lucrative quote ?. Another competitor comes on the scene and to retain the business drops this years quote by £2000 I would tell them to get stuffed.
-
Another little problem I have is ; Fife have reduced their quote by £2000 from last year !!. This suggests to me with rising fuel and ancillary prices that Fife have been taking the SNFC for mugs and ripping us off with our committee treating us as imbiciles. Perhaps Ian would like to explain how Fife were able to make this gesture ?.

Just been on the official SNFC web site and wonder why their are no statements regarding transportation quotes nor Newbury race. I am steadily frustrated at the lack of information from a well paid full time Secretary who apparently treats the membership with contempt. I personally cannot find anywhere in the rule book regarding wicker baskets nor was their any mention of them at the AGM

The late Andy Durning Lanarkshire race controller once told me never to liberate racers or trainers when the wind was greater than 35 mph for old birds and 30 mph for youngsters. Yesterday we had gusts in excess of 45 mph. I wish you well and hope they have not been blown to far off course.

Hope so too Alf, I have always been a bit patient at this time of the year. By the way Alf seperated them on Monday and it was only to-day their wing pattern changed and are back up to about 2 hours free flying. -
The Mrs is there to cook and clean my mess ! and I am only saying that cos she went to her bed LOL.

Only interested in the returns to-day Gareth as it only hit 5c with the Hygrometer on 85% at mid-day. Still no training weather for me. -
Walter never at any time had a mouse problem probably due to the loft design. Straw breakes up naturaly eventualy when treading over it daily and I forked it over once a week. The wife complained for years about treking straw into the hoose now its plain crap lol.

Since 1975 my birds have been on straw deep litter cleaned out at the end of the moult and replaced same day, will repeat myself, my birds have never had YBS. This will be my first year cleaning out daily and should I be unfortunate to contract it I will have them back on deep litter till the end of my days.

Paid £500 for mine 14 years ago and would never be without him, if he went missing which is impossible I would pay anything to have him returned safely.

If I knew the answer to that one Alf I would let you know however they had not been paired up at that time and that is all I can put it down to plus they were never out till mid-day when it had warmed up a bit. I dont condone those training at this time but its not for me and basket work is totally different from free flying, I am not telling my granny how to suck eggs !. -
What kind of preperation and how do you pick your candidate ask's Lewis ? And no one gave the answer probably because their is'nt one. I believe the reason Joe Murphy's idea of asking fanciers to nominate a pigeon at the start of the year to compete in the gold cup was folly as fanciers did not know how and why they had won the previous year with that particular bird. Dal2 nearly had the answer but not quite and yes in my opinion you can get them but its down to the individuality of the bird. In the past it was my policy to single up from the A66 at least 3 weeks before the event and it stood me in good stead. But that was years ago, hopefully I will be returning to my old ways this year.

The Objects of The Scottish National Flying Club used to read " To promote Long Distance Racing into Scotland " Whoever had that removed should hang their head in shame. We send Y/B to 300 miles yet some want an old bird national from that distance. POPPYCOCK.

Aye Lewis, Niort 680 miles and its not the distance or race point where the problem begins its the fact the SNFC is transported by middle England organisations. Please bear with me and I will give in my opinion half the problem. 1980 the birds were taken by Cheshire fed to Nantes and liberated all to-gether, A hard race ensued with a bird dropping into a Cheshire loft at 20.00 with my candidate following it into his loft, The guy won his Combine and kept mine a prisoner for 2 days before letting it continue his merry way. If memory serves me the winner into Scotland was timed about 08.00. It is obvious they have to fly single the last part of the journey. This year I believe we are being transported by the Midland National whose Southern border is Cheltenham. 300 mile single up could be the reality if your candidate is in the wrong batch plus they will be being pulled along by birds racing 300 miles. In my opinion we should be going ourselves and if its £15 per bird then so be it.

You have wet feeders, What minerals are you giving them and check for excess salt in them as the feeders are no doubt drinking to much water and pumping it into the nestlings, Result watery droppings, Experienced it last year with a cock taking in to much pink minerals. Removed minerals problem solved..
