  1. Same here Jimmy,Summer time -4.c.on the thermometer in the back garden, snow three parts down Skidaw, only good thing this morning the sun's out and there's no wind.Looks like a good day ahead.
  2. Hi Jim,I have a basket in the young bird loft all the time. When I first put the birds through I leave the front open so the birds can go in and out as they please, throw some black rape in now and then just to tice them in when required.I also put the drinkers on the ouside of the basket and remove the main loft drinker. That way they are not frightened of the basket and know where the drinkers are.Once they are use to doing what i want I shut the front and only open it when i want them to go in it for training, once again a little black rape gets them in.Lindsay
  3. Been poor this morning but made a good afternoon with hardly any wind but what there was, was cold.
  4. Beauties mate,I use to breed barlesses from a black cock X yellow pied hen.
  5. If he's getting lieu of notice you can't work it,that's the whole idea of lieu. That means he'll get 13 weeks wages when he finishes work and can't claim any benefits for 13 week from the date he finished work because basically he's being paid.He can however start another job during the 13 week and accept payment, all taxable.Sounds about right.I was made redundant in 2002,I don't think theres anything changed.Pop down to his local employment office the'll have all the info.Lindsay

  7. Got this message off my antivirus provider.Lindsay April 1st is a date often targeted by the creators of malware and this year will be no exception. There are currently a lot of reports in the media about potential new virus threats and speculation about the potential impact of new viruses such as the Conficker worm. However, provided your computer’s operating system and your avast! antivirus are up to date, the risk is very small and there is no need to be unduly concerned. To ensure you are protected against any potential new malware threats, before March 31st you should make sure that your antivirus program and virus definitions are completely up-to-date and that you have installed all available Windows security updates. We recommend checking that avast! is set to update itself and the virus database automatically – to check this, right click your avast! a-ball in the bottom right corner of your screen, select “Program settings†and then “Update (Basic)â€. Here you should make sure that the virus database is set to “automaticâ€. Also, whenever you switch on your computer, make sure that avast! is actually running. Some viruses are designed to specifically target antivirus programs and to turn them off, however avast! contains strong self-defense which is designed to prevent this. If avast! is running, you should see the normal blue a-ball in the bottom right corner of your screen. If it is switched off, it will contain a circle with a red line through it. And finally, make sure that you have the latest Windows security updates. In particular, the Conficker worm takes advantage of a Windows vulnerability which Microsoft fixed in late 2008. Users of Windows Vista or XP (SP2 and higher) should have had this update installed automatically.

  14. I have three lofts all with the roof sloping to the back,I don't have problems with birds acting stupid on the roof because they are not allowed on them from day one.The only time they are allowed is when they are young birds looking round .Once they are flying that's it.I have a six foot lengh of white plastic conduit which keeps them in order.Lindsay

  16. Been reading on a few different sites about the Sparrow hawk problem. The idea of having a flashing light appears to help sort the problem.I've never tried this but several fanciers who have have all given good reports. If your interested here's a web site where you can get hold of a lamp.Lindsay http://www.sitebox.ltd.uk/product/LEH010/jsp-minilite-traffic-management-lamp/
  17. Hi Jimmy,I think my old man use to call them skimmers as they use to skim the hedges, never saw them myself. As a kid we use to race short ditty, following the railway line. One week we would fly 5/6 East the following week same West nex week 10 mile and so on.Only one clock in the club and that was in the pub window. We put the race rubber in a match box and ran like hell to the pub.An allowance was made for running distance to the pub window. One man on the clock with the sec sitting beside him writing names down, made it easier when the cock was opened.Lindsay

  21. QUALIMINTIC,is a pour on wormer used for cattle and AMPROLIUM is for coxi but be careful with it because it can cause thiamine problems.I would go for baycox.Lindsay
  22. Have used epsom salts and bicarbonate of soda for years ,level teaspoon of each in two litres of water but first pour very hot water on the carb soda which will then thrith up.Usually use it on Thursdays if the birds aren't performing too well. This will not purge them.Like anything else that you buy there's always something cheaper if you care to try it.My opinion.Lindsay

    Hawks

Getting hammered here in Cumbria.Sparrow hawks and peregrines, just about frightened to let them out. Quote >>> IB."First, I'd be surprised if any bird flew into a loft to escape a predator: I'd think that totally against nature as even in humans its instinctive never to lead the enemy back to your camp". Mine head for the loft as soon as they see Percy, top perches out of the way and you'll be lucky to get them back out of the loft for a day or two.Lindsay C
