cheers i think i found it pritty early as i keep my corn stored sealled containers and saw wood chippings near them cos they are near the door but i didn't see the hole proberbly cos i was stood on it, so i i think they may have been in there 3 days at tops hopefully because i found the nest that will be the end ,and cleaned the shaed top to toe and everything in it just don't want to leave any stone unturned because i am very overlooked and i shouln't have my pigeons here anyway so could do with out the neighbours noticing.

I went in to my corn store/junk shed this morning an found a some wood nawed away under where the door is ,took everything out ,found a few grains of corn lots of rat droppings kept stripping the shed and a rat ran straight past my leg i think i know where it was gonna nest as it had stripped this laminate uderlay that i had stored in there and thats where it came out from i have blocked where it came in to the shed with a thick tin put rat poison under the shed and rat traps in the shed is there anything else that can be don't want to be infested and i know nothing about rat and pest control all help appreciated .

how you getting on any progress was intersting to read as i have had a similiar problem and found the barley sorted them out,l found feeding them a small amount of barley before leting them out 1/3rd of an ounce each 1hour before letting them out helped them fly and when i got them in a full feed either till they left barley or half went to the drinker ,i mixed 50 percent barley in with my normal mix versa laga 4 seasons. They stay in the loft the rest of the day.

I don't know where your local club is i live in hemsworth not too far away and theres a club in kinsley, thomlinson pet suppliers in outwood might be able to guide you on a local club they sell pigeon corn and what have you.Get a few birds see how you go, you dont have to race to start off with .i would be happy to bread you a pair of young birds next year if you wish. All the best what ever you do .
-
don't like deep litter gives rats and mice somewhere warm and corn gets mixed in to
-
wouldn't worry ,they have plenty of time to get the wieght off escecially when paired up next year it will drop off them, mine fly out during the winter as they do most of there flying then cos they are in one hut and stop laying and driving once the cold weather comes ,give the the bird barley in the mix let them take what they nead till they leave it they know what they nead more than us.

I would try and put a picture up so members no what space you have you could put a descent aviary at the front where the window is with a divider put traps in above the roof so theres a good landing area put some boxes in one half of the aviary keep your stock in there and divide the inside in to two, one with acess to aveiry, the over half of the averiy maybe young bird section, over old bird section.

IF you want a few young birds to get you started next year give me a message im in Hemsworth near Pontefract good look with your loft.
-
how are they loft flying if they aren't flying and trapping well through the weak then I would say like Andy says cats etc I had a problem with mites which the birds wouldn't behave at all,if only from racing and he has to remove a rubber off the birds I think they are expecting to be grabbed maybe that's why they won't go in ?
-
I had one come back yesterday shot ,only loft flying gone straight through the bird, some lads at work go on these hunts so I asked them what they shoot they say anything that moves .
-
you can watch your birds better with small numbers and one will shine above the overs when its on form and you get to know each bird and its personality. mine aren't what I would call tame but they don't mind trapping when im in the loft ,even without food . The main problem I have is if you loose one training etc you don't have many pigeons to re-coup your loss and then you don't want to train paired up pigeons for the same reason I guess it would be hard to get them trained for races with stories of people having bad tosses all the time you get a bad one your wiped out .my advise would if you can fit a bigger loft in your garden get one ,you can always keep small numbers in till you get used to it all .
-
yes I have a loft of the same size in the garden only takes a minute to scrape out each day I keap only 8 birds in mine ,I lets them bread each year and offer the younun's away for free,i don't race but love looking after them ,training them you could try get some late breads of top fanciers, could get you on your way
