  1. First got it about 10 years ago from youngsters brought in then had it next 3 Then gave them colostrum the first milk from the mother to the young calf when the youngsters were being reared and a few weeks after being spained ,and never had it the 4 when using colostrum Stopped using it and it returned but in a milder form At first signs now withdraw food for a full 48 hours and treat water with salmonella paratyphus product Problem solved There is a member of our club never had it fact ,his birds race so that blows a lot of theories out o the water lol Why did I stop using colostrum. 5. Hi robert I stopped giving black minerals to breeders because they would gorge on it and drink far to much water Still give them pink minerals ,but found if I left it with racers they weren't intrested hence like any penny pinching Scot why waste money lol racers happy without grit ,I do give them maybe once a month during racing a multivit in water like vita pro or johnsons tonic and to get them right when required a good multi energy oil Other than that plenty fresh water ,certainly no additives during winter When I visited John Smale about 13 years ago he told me to be very careful with minerals leading up to nationals
  6. I only take youngsters from my stock birds ,During the breeding season they are given pink minerals and grit My racers are celibate they never get pink or black minerals ,they get a multivit in water once a month when racing only They have not had grit for 3 years Remember listening to van lint say he had doubts about feeding minerals Do you feed grit and minerals to racers and if so why ? Thanks bit of a topic on these dark nights
  7. Yes agree mate regarding our transporter capacity But 25 far to many widow cocks hold their space well hence problem You don't have a water problem your winners sit at the flap end at fechan Friday nights
  8. Basket trained the youngsters well over forty years ago it was just something that was done Mind you only bred 30 in those days Don't basket train them now if I was honest couldn't tell you when I stopped I care for loads of youngsters that drop in during the season ,at its height can have up to 20 plus per week I have a full size race hamper in the feed store where they are cared for ,and also individual boxes What I do know from years of watching if there are in excess of 15 per basket they can't get to the water FACT Hence the individual boxes or water hung on three sides ,inside and changed three times daily If the basket numbers were halved on race night returns would improve and birds would access water Jmho
  9. Hi steve It's not the fancier,it's the way lofts are designed I could cringe at loft designs seen at shows etc,They can look very modern in design to the purchaser but fail in the basics ,ie they let in water The loft in the photo for example t&g boarding up to window height then the window is inset apart from sealant there is nothing stopping water ingress ,there should be a cill fitted at this point whether in upvc or timber dependent on finish If the doors were offset on construction this could be overcome very easily They usually build lofts with thin softwoods boarding which gives up its purpose very easily I have built many lofts for national and double national winners and not one of them have asked for vents at low level All other points have been well covered regarding overfeeding and overtraining Best shortcut to success is purchase and read Dave allen s Widowhood Year And get the loft Dry (which he States clearly ) Atb Mick

  13. The Apple never falls far from tree The closer your racer is bred from a performance pigeon the greater the chance of success This years gold cup winner of gus and Pam power 2nd open last year 1st open this year Davy Jaimeson 's Ancencis hen up with the leaders once again Just pure class In my opinion they were born good and in the hands off wonderful pigeon fanciers regardless of breeding Jmho

  23. Walter it was with great Dissappointment of the majority of fanciers in the Solway federation when you chose to step down from office and your re appointment today as Vice President only confirms that With your profession approach and guidance along with others that you know only to well ,you guided the federation from near ruin into one with a very healthy bank balance ,new transporter ,website ,etc etc Having known you personally now for many years I feel very fortunate to be able to call you a friend A Very Dear Friend ,Long may your good health continue and you truly deserve all the plaudits for your efforts in the sport of pigeon racing and far beyond .
