cemetary Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Over the last few months there has been a number of birds in the garden, the last couple of days hardly a starling now, whats happened. At one time there was over 20 sparrows feeding with a load of young blackbirds and starlings. Very strange like.
THE FIFER Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 not many sparrows or starlings around, and not seen many blackbirds, never see a thrush now

THE FIFER Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 seagulls are also getting a problem i think with small birds, (they cant get fish to eat so now they are having Chicken )
cemetary Posted August 11, 2017 Author Report Posted August 11, 2017 Same here ..Watched the sparrow hawk take a family of blue tits over a few days. Never saw any blue tits this year either. Fed the birds 2-3 times a day, now don't even keep the old bread just to feed the crows, not a chance.
showman Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Even living out here in the sticks, last year we had a lack of sparrows about the place. This year, different ball-game, with the 'bottom garden' full of them, and they're breeding well.

philg50 Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Last year garden birds and area very quiet and scarce ,this year from about Feb when a sparrow hawk moved on things have picked up black birds singing and small birds in the trees at back .
sandy25 Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 If you watch the crows when bop is about you'll notice that they mob them making lots of noise calling more crows into the area to help with the mobbing , perchance it might be handy to keep them on your side. seagulls are a different thing altogether .atb
cemetary Posted August 11, 2017 Author Report Posted August 11, 2017 Sandy, the crows only go for the spara and the buzzard, they don't mob the peregrine, as they are too high mate.

Big Davie Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 not many greenfinch about either.i heard there was a disease that was wiping them outJimmy, last couple of times I've fished the local Calder I've noticed that small bird life is completely absent, I see gulls, craws , and cushies passing overhead but no small birds at ground level, don't even hear anything singing, discussed this one some of my mates but can't quite get my head around this, I used to rake all these areas when I was boy collecting eggs and it was teeming with birds then, can't understand where all the small birds have went too??
