I have a tree at the back of the garden ,the birds seem tae like .philg ,it starts of as a big bunch of white blossom about the size of a saucer they die down then the berries come they also make good wine

Jim hannah Posted September 28, 2016 Report Posted September 28, 2016 Does anybody pick and boil the elder berries for their birds,now that they are ready?Plenty about just now, the wood pigeons are on them daily, they actually start on them while they are still green. we have them next to our lofts but our birds don't go near them.they are dark purple colour very bitter in taste.In the spring the woodies eat the buds.

Out in the 'sticks' here, a lot of older folk would still call the Elder a Burrtree, which is strange, because it looks nothing like a Burr !!
