cemetary Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 in your views what can be done to move the sport forward? atb Well you put the post up, maybe you can start with something with your experience with the doos. My view is, its far too expensive, for any person coming in, no matter how much you try and help someone to get kicked off.
sandy25 Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Maybe short fast local wednesday night races might create a buzz .
sandy25 Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 More information out there .More mentoring of new starts .more encouragement ,its not all about here's a couple of latebreds ...constructive criticism not always helpful especially in newbies.
bullcock Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Two things we need to do is 1st maintain the members we have 2nd recruit new members. The first,Is about keeping the sport moving forward with technology, for example, UK wide co-ordinated race liberation web site that everyone could watch and see the wind and liberation's unfolding live with computerized estimated speeds along the journey this would help avoid clashing with today's technology and give a better idea of the eta you would think this would be a possibility, also better organized race programs, like collective liberation's, like what the West is trying to do, just a couple of ideas. The Second,Recruiting new members, unfortunately you can't advertise outside the pigeon world for new members (or could we?)it doesn't matter what issues we face or how great the racing is going, even if pigeon racing had no issues, we will only get new members from being exposed to the sport through family of friends who already have pigeons and they get the bug by direct experience of the sport and this isn't happening unfortunately, as we are declining as the fanciers get older, the sport is getting closer to it's end.Unless someone else has a brilliant idea, I'm all ears.
Tony C Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 In every aspect of the sport remove the word pigeon and replace with duiven. We'll no longer be racing so called rats of the skies.
THE FIFER Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Get the public more involved, which we do with all our charity gives, Ian does a good job of that on basics along with the members , we should it to the public what we and all the unions do towards charities etc, the riprap show gives a lot, we need to get more in the public press , what is done. Just last week some of the public were amazed about the Queens bird which was lost, the vast general public don't know what they really are and do,

Ian McKay Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Ban kids from playing computers and games machines Learn them some animal husbandry Learn them that they can go out in the rain Learn them football is not just a TV sport they can go out and play it themselves :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:
sandy25 Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Maybe if charity events were more published ie into local papers its all news and helps getting what is done for good causes into the publics eye maybe the odd photos of cheques being handed over now that might go national with support from the press we might get somewhere( its no use having a charity do if we dont get any publicity back )....maybe organise a charity race on a national scale with proceeds to a deserving charity or school aid .Some schools nowadays have lofts we might be able to help other schools with those projects...
Uphill Lofts Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 The middle aged, (semi retired) with grown families, financially secure and grandchildren visiting on week-ends, are the ones we should be encouraging to take interest in the sport.

Ian McKay Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 The middle aged, (semi retired) with grown families, financially secure and grandchildren visiting on week-ends, are the ones we should be encouraging to take interest in the sport. Our sport is 70% old age pensioners with kids and grandkids what happened to all of them we have lost two generations of offspring to our sport
peter pandy Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 I recently had a youngster interested in my pigeons from viewing them over the gate but as the wife was not in I would not let him into the garden far less the pigeon lofts. I am sure you will know why if you think about it as you just never know where it can lead to in this day and age. Why do you think there are 2 teachers in every classroom these days..If there is a future it has to be with people made redundant, invalidity or old age pensioners not youngster from outside the family. Get their hands dirty cleaning sh#t you must be kidding.
Walter swanston Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 There is a post on here about attracting recently retired persons into the pigeon game, I believe this a perfectly viable idea. I started in the doos at the relatively advanced age of 63 and have now been a fancier for 20 years ( not particularly successfully) and have enjoyed every minute of my time with the birds and hope to continue for a while yet health permitting. my point is that older guys with the kids gone are often in a financial position to build a loft with advice from experienced fanciers and can afford to but all the equipment required plus the pigeons.I have thought about this quite a lot and would be happy to publicise pigeon racing to older men in the newspapers or whatever.
sandy25 Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 It seems to me that this sport is full of those who have lost faith in the idea of a future of the sport itself we are capable of training our birds to win from extreme distances in adverse conditions andseldom loose faith in our birds .But inthe future of the sport we support the very essence of our way of life we see no future ALL NEGATORY WAVES .correct me if I'm wrong but by doing nothing aren't we just waving goodbye to the very thing we're trying to save ?......as one of the pensioner starts take it from me it wont last long for myself and none of y children grandchildren or great grandchildren will as peter pandy says want to dirty their hands shovelling sh** .but just maybe if I get a chance to inthuse into just one of them the sheer joy of watching the birds dive from the sky onto the loft to dance and coo with the joy being and to share that with them just maybe then there is a glimmer of a hope .and if each and everyone of us is notprepared to get off our arses and try then we may as well call it a day who amongst us is willing to pick that day may as wel be the first monday in march as any other get your fingers out and help promote or just Give up and negatory wavee the sport GOODBYE....
Guest bigda Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 The best way to move it forward. You have to get club workers And they have to make pigeon racing for free. By going out and getting sponsorship and then being able to get the sponcer As much publicity as possible. Through your own. Pr man
sandy25 Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Maybe its time to move away from small local clubs with few members and to have county clubs instead.which might help but bigger is not always best .there must be a middle road .....
eastcoaster Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 My soninlaw has an American girlfriend and her view was that all pigeons are for shooting as they polute the streets and she is almost right , the council,s should be out culling all street pigeons because that is where the public get their opinion of our birds .Most kids of today are lazy bastewards and have no interest in playing any sports so are very unlikely to clean shiet up.We must face that the sport is in decline but is not finished so keep enjoying .

pigeonman2013 Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 prize money will bring more people into the sport
KIDDON Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 There are far to many problems now regarding the keeping of pigeons 1 costs2 jealousy,backstabbing3 lack of support from others4 problems with neighbours5 Hawks,cats,rats,mice6 losses7 time involved to spend with pigeons8 transport9. weather Every week in the pigeon press there are fanciers finishing up or passing away this sport is in decline and I am afraid in the future it will only exist on a laptop computer game
Ian McKay Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 It's the old story every time what excuse can I find to do nothing ? Get sponsorship Increase prize money Club officials should do more Unions should do more Reduce fees pigeon racing is to dear? Everybody should do more while you all sit at home and do nothing at the club The answer to our problems is in our own hands we are just too lazy to do anything but complain My Club / Fed / Union Fees + rings are approx £200 reasonable I think All I need is some doos and food and I am off Pigeon loft you don't need a spacious palace my first loft!! was an orange box and it kept me happy for years There is no shortage of money to buy birds Think about the above and ask yourself what have you done to promote the sport or help out at Club or Fed How many times have you given a new start the help they need I see Peters reason for not letting a youngster into his garden or loft but you could have made arrangements for the lad to return with one of his parents or went and visited them asking for there advice, but it's not good enough kids and new starts need our help cause they will not get it anywhere else We need to take a long look at our sport and help it or we are doomed Falling members Falling birdage Transporters 60% empty but we will still not help each otherUnions trying to stop other unions Stupid unnecessary suspension only to prove how powerful they are Times are hard and getting harder we need to pull together Sorry lad's it will never happen we are destroying ourselves

We man Posted February 29, 2016 Report Posted February 29, 2016 When you read last weeks 26 2 16 BHW Alton HS in the Staffordshire fed disbanded and 8 members applied to their nearest club which was well within the radius only 2 members were allowed in the rest have no other fed to fly in,this is something we see to many times so think we should be trying to keep our own kind in the sport and get our own house in order and then try and get new blood interested.
