William Reid Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Always like to up the feeding when rearing young birds. So will give them 50% barley and 50% layers pellets. And gem ultra vits twice a week. One thing I would like to say if your old birds are showing signs to their face that they are feeding young birds for me that is not a good sign of feeding program. When you have correct amount of feeding in front of your birds old birds faces will always be clean and the young birds will never be heard oh and I always have a pocket of peanuts when I go to my loft .
hotrod Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Can I ask why no maize pleaseBecause they don't need it or eat it when rearing unless it's all they have .

Interesting point Billy, ive always been of thr opinion old birds whose faces and wattles are not clean when rearing had a canker issue. Its interesting the use of barley when rearing, which is different to most that have posted on the thread. Is their a reason behind it that you found better to maybe a way you had done previously?
greenlands Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 How did we manage to rear good youngens 50/60 years ago ? Can remember my dad going for feed and only allowed a stone (14 pound).Managed without all the add ons. What's with breeding youngens that big they can't get off the loft floor for days, the lean one's are always first to perch and first in the sky, unless someone has a different idea ?

I allways thought it was inexperienced yearlings trying to feed there young and making a mess of it,and by pumping to much water into them.the rest of the pairs are getting the same mixture and they are spot on so it cant be the feeding
Roland Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Oats 45%, Tic Beans 35% Barley and wheat about 10% each. Roughly. But never stint on the oats.
