Not sure when Scottish fanciers last sent to Barcelona/Palamos with the BBC probably late 70's. some of the older generation might be able to tell you. Over a thousand mls takes a bit of doing.

John Ellis had bird do 1000 miles twice..."Endurance" i believe it was called :)

That's correct, I had all the old photos etc when I done a loft report on John a few years ago. Johns in his 80's now still a very good fancier.

twice on the result BBC into Scotland?

Endurance was the correct name ....pigeon you could found a family on :)

Yes MIK -, that's true the red pied cock Endurance still plays an important part in johns breeding programme to this day with his progeny still running through the loft, same as Wellbank Pride, Paris Cock, Patricia and many others. That's why John is hard to beat his loft inmates are steeped in long distance winners, generation after generation. ;)

Wellbank Endurance - 1000miler

In 1971 John entered his now famous Red pied cock "Endurance" at the Usher Vaux Beauvais race, then later in the year the fed Avranches race. In 1972 John plucked up the courage to send this cock to Palamos 1044.mls with the "British Barcelona Club". He finished 2nd sect.E and I think 82nd Open. In 1973 John flew the flag again for Scotland from Palamos, or (should I say Endurance did!) This time he won the sect and was 27th Open, and the remarkable thing here was, that he was flying approx 400mls, YES 400 further than the pigeons that beat him. John must have been elated! He won the BBC trophy, a gold medal, and the Gordan Hair cup, furthest flying bird in race time! Endurance in fact came direct from the 1965 Rennes E sect winner. Wellbank Endurance was later bought by the late Jim Biss; who had him at stock for 4 years. John bought the pigeon back through F.W.S.Hall of Enfeild, at one of his famous auctions, for in fact less than he was sold for! On return John took him from a box, looked at him, let him go and he went half circle to the board, straight through the trap, and up to his old nest box! John was very pleased for this special pigeon, home at LAST! Endurance came direct off the 1965 sect winner "Wellbank Pride", who was from the Matt Telfor gift egg containing Bob Strachan x Dave Shearer of Strathaven, in Lanarkshire bloodlines.

Still with the B.B.C, John sent a young bird to Rennes with them in 1972 & 1973 respectively and got both his young red & young mealy cocks home from 583mls. Not bad going for young birds. This must be some sort of record.

Couple of guys go for it in Ireland....you could go with the BICC

marking stations are the issue though

Scottish fanciers have had doos fae rome etc

Quite a few fanciers from the south of Ireland are now members of the BICC with a view of competing in the Barcelona races. It would be some endurance test for us fanciers here in the N/west of Ireland though :emoticon-0138-thinking:

Their definately not up our way in the N/west George, theres a lot of interest around the Dublin area with more fanciers joining the BICC.

he's Newry City so is that the North East? Regardless it's one hell of a journey

Paul & Courtney (dtr) have an advert in Homing World stud book 2015. Although not 100% sure I think he's in the Banbridge area, but as stated, races out of Newry.

Newry is close to the border with the south of Ireland George and it would be towards the southeast of the North.

I contacted the BICC and the BBC 2yrs ago when there was word of a marking station at Carlisle but as they had no one to run the station it was shelved.I contacted John Hodgson who said he had just started a marathon family and although he had heard of interest locally he had no intention of sending at that time.I was quite willing to pick up all Scottish birds at that time.Since then interest has grown in Ireland and I can understand the feeling of having a Barcelona bird in the loft.
