I never saw a Redstart before but my wife knew them as soon as she saw them. I thought they were Bull finches but she got her bird book out to confirm she was right. They are beautiful birds and I just hope the sparrowhawk keeps away.

I have never seen Redstarts either but there are a variety of birds turning up in areas they have never been spotted before. I photographed Mandarin Ducks just off Loch Lomond about 2 weeks ago. I think this is due to the abnormal winter we have had.

They breed here with us every year, nest in holes in the stone walls, smart looking birds, well done Mrs. Del recognising them, they spend the summers here much like the swallows, you would have noticed Del that the hen is nowhere near as colourful as the cock in the pic.

Yes m8, the cock was more colourful , the hen almost full brown with touch of grey, both had red tails but I didn't see that. Mrs Del said it but my eyesight not as good lol.

Nice 1 COLIN, thought we were going off our heads lol. Chad said very rare, not in the north section of Lanarkshire lol very lovely wee birds though, I understand as soft beaked birds ( insects etc )

Saw a wee flock of them on bushes at Longannet power station last year , think they ere after the berries

Sorry to say that redstarts are pretty common not inclined to flock and unfortunately the flock you espied were in all probability Goldfinches which can be mistaken for them with their red faces which often appear to cover the chest area. One place you can always find Redstarts is Luss at Loch Lomond. Take sannies a flask and enjoy the view.

We have had some Mandarins (2 males and 1 female) turn up here (near Inverness) a couple of months ago. They are stunning ducks when you see them up close. I will try to add a couple of photos I took last week.

Nice birds, not native but breed here as escapees from brought in birds, no one moans about them being out there
