FYI - I have this information from a reliable source.

It seems there is going to be a shortage of Colombovac PMV after January 2014, sounds like there is currently plenty of stock but it has an expiry date of 25 January 2014 so it wont be available at the Blackpool show if you were thinking of waiting until then!!!

Apparently the manufacturer is moving production to Europe which I hope will then mean better supply!!!

The other problem could be that there is also no stock of Colombovac anywhere in Europe so the UK stock may get exported to Belgium/Germany etc.

It doesnt sound like a short term shortage either, could be closer to the end of summer 2014 before we see Colombovac again.

I've just ordered mine and it seems there is still good stocks at the moment!

Just use some other company. Colombovac, imo , doesn't stop pigeons catching pmv, that's why they now have a bad name.

I know Delboy but the other one in my opinion is even worse!! We found that Colombovac does work but we have to do everything religiously as non of the vaccines help if you vaccinate them once they already have PMV. One of my mates lost his finger after he accidently self injected himself with the nobilis vac. I have heard of problems when birds have been vaccinated and then they start showing signs of PMV, our vet said that it was because they had it when we vaccinated them.

I dont think Colombovac has a bad name, but you may have had diferent experiences.

Cheers.

My birds have had pmv 3 times and twice I used Columbovac and once Chevita p200.They have been vaccinated at least once every year since it was made law and I will never use any of these 2 products again.I tried to contact Chevita many times about their product and they refused to talk to me or answer my e mails.I had to cull 18 specially bred ybs after using their product. Nobilis is far more efficient and Ive never had any problems with it .

Can I ask where you ordered it from. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

Got the Columbovac out the BHW m8, the chevita through their site.

That nobilis one I thought the syringe was sticking when injecting the doos thought it was just mine but done another fanciers and it was the same

Aye, sometimes thick in the syringe but defo the choice of the big boys nowadays ;)

Is that not temperature related?

Over the years i have always favoured Colombovac, there was a shortage of it a few years back too and i used the Nobilis that year. My preference is still Colombovac though

and when possible i will always use it.

The Colombovac is water based so is far safer to use for the fancier, the Nobilis is an oil based vaccine and can cause the type of complications noted above when the guy lost his finger, though i suspect he must Not have had it attended to right away which in turn caused him to lose his finger.

IMO its WHEN you vaccinate them that determines how effective it works, i do mine at 20/21 days while still in the nest and have had no problems whatsoever with pmv when doing it at this time.

In 2001 i wasn't too healthy with a bad depression and neglected my responsibility to vaccinate, this resulted in me losing 29 of 30 Yb,s in the November of that year and i almost gave up the birds altogether, it was only due to the friendship of Vincie Hendry who organised new stock for me from Ken Buchanan that i stayed in the sport.

I've vaccinated them every season bar that one since it became law and in all honesty PMV hasn't been a problem in my lofts.

George, buy yourself wider syringes. Keep it in your pocket or somewhere warm in the cold weather when using it because the cold does make it thicker, also keep giving it a shake. I'll check the syringe size later for you.

Very good adviceemoticon-0137-clapping.gif as this thins the oil out and makes vaccinating much easier.

I'll try the thicker syringes. ...I already keep in my pocket and a shake and put it between my hands to warm it up it made no difference

the syringes are about the same size

with makings of 2 mil for colombovac and 2.5 mill for nobivac

the needles are larger bored for nobivac which used to come with the vaccine

George, the syringes I use are 2.5ml ones. I also have a 6ml one and the measured gradients are also suitable on that. The benefit of the broader syringe is that it decreases the pressure required to move the vaccine. Think of plumbing and the pressure increases when your flow goes from 22mm to 15mm, so the reverse is the effect here. I was told this by a nurse, the syringe info, that is. The needles supplied with the Nobilis will fit either syringe.

The only thing with doing them in the nest is the manufactures say you must use it all when opened not use at a later date so unless you can get all your birds the same age you would have a lot waste ..
