THE FIFER Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 some Feds are having losses of young birds from their first ever race, its the first time they have been in a transporter and over night etc, could this be the reason, its all new to them, in large numbers being liberated , any thoughts on this, and how should they be prepaired for it, and what is your preperation(training) method before the first race,
OLDYELLOW Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 basket ybs on a Friday night throughout season over night feed them and water them in baskets and they get used to them , I believe the big losses are mainly down to poor training , clashing and too many small concerns going down the road and bop strikes on route safety in numbers , It's nice to see a lot of people out there are starting to try get feds together , makes sense long term cheaper and better flying for all and most of all widens the competition
geordie1234 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Well this year i basketted my young birds at 8 o'clock at night and trained them about 6 am the next morning so I think good basket training can make the difference because my returns were great losing 4 over the coarse of 3 races out of 27.
greenlands Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Lack of training Archie, some fanciers think that they will follow the flock but believe me they won't and with the price of everything ie.fuel rocketing it's going to get worse. Some won't even come out of the basket and when they do the rest have gone. :animatedpigeons:
geordie1234 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Agree with greenlands I've witnessed pigeons coming out a training trailer and try to land back on it. You will get away with it with some youngbirds but whats the harm in a couple of chucks will do them the world of good
andy Burgess Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 have basketed trained in the past , but not done it since moving up ?? i should maybe get back into it. although to be honest have lost more before than here ? maybe more experience on my part and better stock selection .we tend to have 1 bad race in our programme for youngters (our 4th race) into the bermuda triangle
geordie1234 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Providing the birds are healthy and fit enough to be in the race basket in the first place
andyyy Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 We have a transporter around our way what trains them, my ybs have been on it before the 1st yb every year apart from last, and until last year they have come well the 1st race, putting them on that transporter learns them so much and for sure my ybs will be on this year
Wiley Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 It's not only the training, it's also the health that many people are sending there birds in regarding there losses

THE FIFER Posted January 8, 2013 Author Report Posted January 8, 2013 agree with the posts, but do you think the first time in a transporter with 2-3 thousand birds, traveling and spending the night could be stressful,
greenlands Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Admittedly health is a major issue,we tried taking the young birds to the first race point on a Saturday, still the same result, although I must say liberating them at 15:30 didn't help
Wiley Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 agree with the posts, but do you think the first time in a transporter with 2-3 thousand birds, traveling and spending the night could be stressful, Archie I think your looking a little to deep into things pigeons have been racing for donkeys years as you know against bigger birdages then today. People in my mind cannot blame the darkness system as in my mind people been doing it for around 12 years or more. You hear especially the older fanciers sending young birds still squeaking and winning the races, they must have had the ultimate stress, but they lasted the whole season. Especially over the last three years, I've heard fanciers say they have young bird sickness but sent the ones that looked alright, which I know happens in clubs up and down the country. Then blame the losses they have received on the convoyers.
dal2 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Never bother wae basket training and 6/7 tosses max. Never have great results with ybs but think thats lack of interest!!
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Young bird losses seems to be a 'hot topic' these days. Perhaps wrongfully so?? I only have around 12 years experience racing youngsters, some seasons losing more than others. Some fanciers I talk to on regular basis have 40,50 and 60 years experience racing youngsters and they can recall yb seasons back in the 'good old days' when they were left with 3 youngsters, 8 youngsters etc etc. and races where half their teams were lost from 60 miles.
R.A.M.C.63 Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 use to wean Squekers into Race crate on yb section floor 4-5 days, dont know if it helps, but they soon get use to being with each other in confine space early, helps traing starts, dont panic, Health deffently problem, but when got so many birds in transporter (confined space) varyin tempertures, stress, birds may not show signs at basketing, we,r taking so many birds out there comfort zones ( loft ) enviroments and putting them all in transporter, all lofts have there own balance of infections/ whatever, fine until you upset it, jmo
