Closest weekend to the first weekend in February for us. Although it's very mild at the moment, It's constantly raining, and I do not like entering the lofts that much as the dampness travels with your shoes, and breeding requires a lot of in and outs. We have done the most important thing the beginning of November and that was a ten day treatment against paratyphoid. We will treat for canker when we pair and they are sitting. Cannot remember the last time we treated for cocci or worms.

My birds are just stared going down on eggs, I didn't treat for anything before pairing as i sent a testing kit of and everything came back clear, Ill treat for canker when the young birds are in nest that way they all get treated at the same time. :)

After Blackpool for a few stock pair then late February for racers

Posted

out of the race loft 12 pairs --11 layed so far-12 partings

stock a little slower 2 pairs out of 4 layed-4 partings

spare hens left to run with 4 cocks-1 cock has 2 hens down on eggs -one cock selected 1 hen and are on eggs-other 2 enjoying themselves-no partings just nest bowls behind a bit ply leaning against to walls-maybe should of culled the 4 spare cocks as i find my spare hens race well paired to each other.

NOT BREEDING AS MANY THIS YEAR ------CORN TOO EXPENSIVE!

I really would not pair up this early. Bearing in mind that the youngsters will have to be trained from the time they are 12 weeks old January bred stock will need to be trained around the end of March. This will be the time when the weather is usually bad and the old birds will need to be trained and prepared for racing. I much prefer my youngsters to be 12 weeks much later in the season so that they will not mess up the old bird's schedule. But then it is easy form me because I don't pair my racers or rear from them.

Last year i paired up around the 11th December, the young birds was flying before the start of the old bird season, so mid old bird season

i started training my young birds, it went perfect i guess it's all down to a routine, My young birds went out just about everyday before the season actually started, It was once the season started the weather took a bad turn.

Got 4 pair of Stock just hatching, only looking for about 16Ybs as I have 14 Latebreds already resident in the YB loft which I have started training when there are breaks in the weather. Not breeding off my race team due to cost and available space.

I know that a lot of Fanciers like to get the youngsters on the road at 10 weeks but 12 weeks suits me. I think that if you have youngsters flying for hours at a time they will love to play and chase everything in the sky. It is fine as long as they return home but a lot will get lost because they will find themselves somewhere they don't know and will not know the way back. My biggest objection to early bred birds that are not trained at 12 weeks is the fact that they quickly learn to mess about and when they reach the stage when they are racing they will often play about rather than make a bee line for their loft which is what you need from them. People who like to see their birds flying freely for hours on end are in the wrong sport. They should keep Tipplers which are bred to fly high and wide for hours on end. Most Racing Fanciers want to win races so they need to do what is needed to train the birds to fly home, fast and trap without circling.

I have found that if you train the youngsters at 12 weeks and get them used to flying straight home you can ease off later if you want to. While others are trying to catch up and are training right up until the first race you can be in a much better position because you can take things easier.

I have just been out to the lofts and opened up the stock nest boxes for the cocks to settle before I introduce the henshttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

not a chance of me pairing up until April...

I have found the old birds hold their flights longer, and the youngsters are still in body feather, even for the NFC YB national!

i dont need darkness, nor extra cost of feed for the longer period of having early breds and no stress on old birds, plus the added bonus of not worrying about the temperature ....

each to their own
