Guest Gareth Rankin Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Always interesting to look back at these old results, 1618 members sent 4545 birds, Lib 06.15 North west wind Worth noting that McIvor and McPherson from Airdrie finished 24th open, winning £236, this in today's money equates to £13,190.04. Total pools and prize-money for the race = £5034, value in todays money would be £281,350.26. No wonder that the sport was booming back then flying for that kind of money.click to enlarge

J.F.Robertson, double national winner frae nantes. Dr H O Martin who also won a national [i think again nantes!!!] who also gave me my first racing pigeon, SU 60E2899. and last but no way least J Laidlaw, father of the late Toe Laidlaw who himself won aY/B National.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Avonbridge dominating the East Section Very interesting Gareth I think H.Sloan,Avonbridge who was 13th Open featured in a book, believe it was called 'Creation of the Strain'. Would like to get my hands on that
fid Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 loved reading that result, thank you mr Rankin. There are three members of my old club jedburgh&dist, Mr J F Robertson a double national winner at Nantes Dr H O Martin also a national winner from i think also Nantes [gave me my first racing pigeon su60e2899] and J Laidlaw the father of the late Toe Laidlaw who won the y/b national.[Great birdages in those days]
fid Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Should have mentioned in previous post,Toe Laidlaws father John Laidlaw won Rennes in 1933.Another deceased member Wilf Mcauley won Dorchester in 1983.All past members were fantastic flyers and proper gentelmen.[sadly missed] Wilf being a previous partner of mine.

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Found out a bit more about the three Avonbridge fanciers in the top 20.First into the village that day was Jock Hill,he later went onto win the SCC Dol race. The second Avonbridge bird was to Hammy Sloan.I was right about the book but wrong about the title its called 'The Creation Of A Strain' W D Lea Rayner The Creation of a Strain [Tracing the Evolution of the Racing Pigeon from the Earliest Times to the Present Day] , Teddington: All-British Pigeon Racing, 1955. Had a look for it online and the cheapest is coming in just shy of £70.The best option for me by the look of it is to buy it from a suffolk based book shop,Treasure Chest Books. It would cost £100 but they have a 7 day return and refund policy which would give me enough time to copy it Hammy Sloan raced his pigeons a stonesthrow away from where our lofts are today and he stayed in one of the neighbouring houses to a very young,Davie Young The third Avonbridge bird was to Jock Clifford. My dad's brother married into Cliffords in Avonbridge,I will find out if its the same lines lol

Are you able to shed any light on this?
fid Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Icouldnt say for sure, but in our club we had Hammy Sloans brother wullie.I know hammy came down to Jedburgh often to visit Wullie and exchanged pigeons with some of the members, mainly Russel-Bros who were very good flyers at that time.

The story my Dad told me was that on returning from work down the pit one day,he came home to find a telegram from a Dr. Martin congratulating him on breeding a nat winner, (think it was Nantes too). He showed this to my Dads father saying he couldn't understand it as he had never given or sold any doos to the Doctor? It turned out that Wullie who was a milkman in the town had been given ybs by his Dad and sold them to Dr. Martin! Wullie was a bit of a character so I've been told.Hammy was one of the best flyers around at the time, including winning every race in the clubs ob programme one year when there was 30 or so members. His whole loft of birds was bought by Dr. Anderson, when he decided to call it a day. Thanks again for replying.

Was talking to yer dad about it last night William He said Hammy was clever about the way he sold the doos to Dr Anderson.Apparently eggs off the best of them were floated up to a Standburn loft before the birds were moved. Yer da said he was a dab hand with a sling as well
fid Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Aye W.D.Wullie was a character awe right, when he flew the birds he always won his share, he also flew in partnership with a guy by the name of Eddie Kitzman [aka eddie the pole]and there were some laughs. One race day Wullie went to the loft to watch for the y/bs returning only to find Eddie had taken down the y/b loft. The loft was directly in front and just below the gantry of the o/b loft, and as Eddie explained to wullie that the y/bs are always on the said o/b gantry anyway then they could just use the empty compartment there, and as wullie was goin apeshit the birds began to arrive, well you can imagine the rest.Wullie also showed Bantems successfully and raced the Grayhounds and there are many stories still told in Jed.There were lots of characters then who flew the doos and Jed was a big club 30/40 members with great cameraderie and craic on the friday and saterday nights.Sadly missed now with Jed only havin abt 8 flying members now.
