Amazing, how can people with no knowledge of our sport dare to make those statements, as George pointed out, unweaned youngsters released hundreds of miles from home, who are these faceless people

Just spoke to a guy in Belfast he reported a Lanarkshire doo. The guy said just keep it the Belfast fancier said he didn't want to keep it. That was when the call ended. The Lanarkshire fancier has not been back in touch with the guy who has his bird.

Or what about the fife Fancier contacted by a non fancier asking if they could help them with a stray no was the reply.

I am afraid some guys in our sport do terrible damage to our image and we are all tarred with the same brush.

Quite a lot of other shocking things in it too. Like how is it physically possible that a youngster not weaned can be released hundreds of miles from home? The only contact I can see is info@helpwildlife.co.uk but there is no guarantee that they would retract what's on there. Rather than individuals responding to this, IMO this is one for the unions, especially the RPRA Hawkwatch folks on the allegation that pigeon fanciers one and all are involved in persecution. And SHU on the distortion of SNH / SHU Raptor study - I'll email the link tonight.

Frank you are bang on. Unfortunately there are 'fanciers' out there that give everyone of us a bad name. It does not surprise me that Joe Public thinks like this. It is vital that we do all we can to change this view of the fancy starting by stopping all the idiotic posts about losses and disposing of birds like it is a badge of honour.

I had a non fancier phone me tonight she got my number from the SHU which they do often for me to deal with strays, the lady had a bird in her garden she contacted the sspca who said the couldn't do anything in other words not interested, the lady agrees and says she contributes to them but will rethink, anyway i told her i would call to se, but she phoned back saying it had gone again, so will call if it returns, i think its in with the streeters as there are loads where she lives, the unions are needing to get off their back sides and doo something,

I may be reading this wrong but are they incouraging folk to keep racing pigeons they find and not contact the owner if so is this not illegal as the bird is the property of the registard owner and could be seen as theft

well in the first instance how can these people say that all rung birds found are racing pigeons?i dont take my pigeons hundreds of miles away and i had a call a few years ago from the spca saying someone had handed in a white roller with an npa ring that was regestered to me it cost me £20.00 to go and pic it up which i did so the whole article needs re written as its all lies.

Um, this bs - If you decide not to return the bird to its owner you can either seek permanent sanctuary for the bird with an animal rescue or seek a wildlife rescue who will rehabilitate the bird so that it can join the wild flocks. This takes time - it is not simply a case of releasing them so please do not just let the bird go. But a pigeon which spends time in an aviary away from people and in the company of wild pigeons can regain its wild instincts. If released in a safe place with a group of wild birds it has a good chance of living successfully in the wild.

Maybe i'm reading that wrong, but basically they don't want you to return them - they want you to give them to a sanctuary so they can re-release them still rung? Makes no sense to me lol. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I was talking with a lady yesterday at bird sanctuary they said had a lot of 2011 birds that have been given in lost racing/training and the owners didn't either want them or asked them to destroy them which can proberly give a bad option on racing if bird was in bad way maybe best option but if fit worth a try flying it again
