greenlands Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 I use fairy liquid and a ladies hairpin to pull the back toe through.
GhEtToStar Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 Plenty fairy liquid you might pull a toe or 2 but the ring will go on you might want to get someone to hold the bird while you ring it how old is the bird in question
Guest geordiejen Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 just ring them when they are 5 days old.
Wiley Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 Best thing I find is hot water, soak the leg in it for a good while and it will shrink and generally you can then ring them
GhEtToStar Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 Best thing I find is hot water, soak the leg in it for a good while and it will shrink and generally you can then ring themI thought hot water would increase the blood flow to the foot making it bigger
greenlands Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 Better warm the ring, aluminium and plastic will expand.
Wiley Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 I thought hot water would increase the blood flow to the foot making it biggerIn humans your right, but in pigeons I've found the opposite
just ask me Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 fan of butter myself have used hot water to great effect too
scottym7 Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Swarfega and a tooth pick for the back toe
bibendium Posted February 18, 2012 Report Posted February 18, 2012 any of the above but also try wifes nail file or something simelar on the inside if the ring talke a wee shade off it ,
victorious Posted February 18, 2012 Report Posted February 18, 2012 you will get them on but if u cant seek help from someone quick its better than leaving them unrung, larger type pigeons have bigger feet like people takes the buggers rung at 6 days no later some smaller breeds do at 8 days but get going dont leave it any longer good luck.
just ask me Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 i ring all mine at 5 or 6 days old and just check the next day that they have not fallen off
peter dempsey Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 I agree with the washing up liquid ? but if you dilute it with water it seems to work far betterand much easier to get the ring on regards peter
gulkie Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 vaseline , paper tissue to wipe excess off your fingers and some patience ,you can do it .as andy says but be carful there is a blood vessel at the knuckleat the ankle and if it bursts you cant stop the bleeding.
