It would be interesting to hear any advice or tips, from Basics members, regarding how they prepare a bird before entering it into a show.

So c,mon, what do you do?

Get them clean and free from parasites.

After that i pick the best conditioned birds in my team the morning of the show. Just like in racing season the doos come into "form" during the winter too, so some weeks i take completely different birds from the week before because they have come into top condition since the last outing and the ones taken the first week might have lost a little in that time.

Hand bath a pigeon in warm water then basket it up overnight placed next to a radiator.

Done that once Tony, when i opened the basket in the morning ma doos had oily spots over them fae being too warm, Show Over

1.... Make sure clean and no lice

2.... Redband in feed every 3rd day

3.... Brewers years on feed once a week (Wed)

4.... Clean fresh water daily (Pigeon tea twice a week Mon Wed)

5.... Night before show brought in and placed in warmth. Not direct next to radiator for me but just warm room(tightens bird up)

6... Just enjoy it. Simple is what I prefer. Main thing for me is not to many to a section, Clean feed and water, Baths and the birds come to themself's very well.

Small box perches which are much longer than they are wide.

As has been said bring in nite before and keep them warm.

Take drinkers away quite quickly after feedin, befor you basket, have the gas handy for any marks and feed wae oil on top tightens them up in the feather

Like your post Brian very simple to follow for anyone who is unsure what to do.

What i will say about getting the doos ready is that when my doos are flying out regularly in the winter they have done MUCH better in the show pen compared to when they are kept in for weeks on end. Think this keeps the Fat down and the muscles firmer for the handling classes. jmo

Think he means lighter fluid which is used commonly to wipe of any stains on the flights

Dont show anymore but learnt the trade off Dickie Graham!! We travelled everywhere when I was a boy winning allover!

The gas is lighter gas that was used for cleanin sh** off basicaly cos it dried very fast!!!!

The use of small perches meant that the cleanin was minimal and also with sawdust kept the feet nice and clean.

Showin is a game of chance cos once yer birds are known then it becomes a disadvantage!!!! Have been tae shows wher no Reds wer picked cos there was a chance that a certain owner would win!!! Have also been tae a show where the SALE class winner was BIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Unbelieveable!!!!!!!

I enjoyed showin when I did not win more than when you did!!!!! Very strange game!!!!!! but enjoyable aat the same time.

Keeps the birds very quite during the night ,thus i don't get earache from her indoors

1.Warm bath 2 days before the show - as hot as your hand can stick.

2.Placed in a seperate compartment with plenty clean shavings

3.Kept on the darkness - 30mins light a day only to feed

4.3 days before the show feed 75% Redband, 15% Budgie conditioner and 10% Canary mix right up to date.

5.7 days before the show give them Naturaline in the water every day to the show date.

During the moult like now you should be giving oils on the corn 3 times per week and Tea twice a week. Good flights and feathers will benefit from this.

Worked for me.
