Cogburn Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Sorry on last post it will i think be going for five national diplomas not gold award as they have not all been over the channel ,still some doo ,please correct me if i am wrong sure you will John Ellis of Wellbank won a Gold Award with a 3 year old pigeon
yeboah Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 If your Yearlings return from inland national races then i would be well pleased m8.At best.Have found that yearlings that go to snfc eastbourne make good 2-3 year olds, would also agree patience to build a team ,can perhaps take the odd gamble with the odd one if your overall team is strong and coming well ,every man to his on .
Guest IB Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 John Ellis of Wellbank won a Gold Award with a 3 year old pigeon John featured on a video in which he advocated sending yearlings over the channel, he said something like 'you'll lose a few, but the ones that do it will be good pigeons'. He was talking about 500+ mile races. I've no doubt that experienced fanciers like him are very capable of flying yearlings that distance, but both back then and now I don't consider myself one of that group, and as far as 500+ miles are concerned, when they are 2 y-o that's time enough for me, and when they turn 2 that's when I send them. Stands to reason if I lost them as yearlings, I'd have a lot fewer 2 y-o's to send. Having said that, we weren't flying Ypres back when that video was made, it's 459 miles to me, and I believe that it is an excellent channel race for a yearling, perhaps Gold Cup material as a 2 y-o?
VMS Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 look at the national results very few yearlings on the result from 500miles+ especially into the West on a hard day and there's your answer.
robbiedoo. Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Whats your thoughts on sending a yearling over the channel it would depend where you lived but its not for me i would,nt send any i think the coast hastings is far enough for them
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Only yearlings that I would send are ones that you see a huge development in within the last 7 days, becoming almost like 2 years olds.
