i supose it depends if you are working or not and what you can justify to yourself . but remember there is some honest good pigeon men out there who gift you birds and wish you do well with them these birds are invaluble and if you do well remember who helped you and money dosent buy happiness

too many are looking for the golden ticket

if you sit down and tally up what you have spent on birds not feed or medication just what you bought over the last 3 years then tally up what you made in profit from all your pigeons in 3 years pools prize money etc

thats tough ian,i was all over the uk as a teenager spending every penny i had buying youngsters some direct off english national winners, :egyptian: my old dad would shake his head on my return!!!!,we still work with the bloodlines from the old gamekeeper a mile up the road who would slip me a youngster when helping with the pheasants,at the time i was unwilling sometimes to accept these birds(i was a foolish boy)very few if any of those non west of scotland types stood the test of time. :) :) ;)

Er don't know how to break this gently John, 3 out of my 4 introductions were west of Scotland pigeons, and it was 2 of those that disappeared. :o I think I know what happened to one: Bill Orr saw a bird like it sitting on his roof for around an hour - Bill lives around 1/2 mile from me and is plagued by sparrowhawks (his birds have been locked up since Sep last year because of this) then it was gone, so I reckon this bird was taken. The other - I've no idea on that one.

Agree with what you say about gift pigeons. When I started back, a well known west of Scotland fancier gifted me 2 YBs off his National winning pigeons, clueless me, I threw them both away - sheer lack of experience; Yet another has gifted me a bird which looks very much the part, he's 2 y-o this year, and first time on the road, I think I've half a clue noo, B) so looking forward to that.

Frank i have never tallied it up never will, probably scare me and my bank manager shiteless!! Ihave never been in it for a profit, never will, its nice to pay a bit of their way, but not totally, that means i would have to make commitments and promises that quite frankly i would not want to do.

Again regarding costs of birds my rule of thumb is if i cant afford to lose it (or put it in the garden) then it is too expensive!

After reading all the posts on this thread I thought I would add my two pence worth.

All are not equal and some working men have a lot better income than others, same goes for pensioners, what would you call a fair price for non working pensioners ??

Yip they do hack it Robbie but went through a hell of a lot that didnt , once you find the ones that can cope you concentrate on these ones , ive had them since 1988 here and out of about 30 pairs of them there were only 5 pair that done it the rest were kite and were bined .

think you need more than just fast birds you need somthing with a bit more brain that will take a sharp left well down the road , normally in the quest for high speed the homming instinct goes first ,

All depends where the working man works now if it was the bank and you are getting M1.5/year and M8 as a bonus then buy what you fancy me cheapest and best I can genuinely afford

good point but most of the pensioners i know are pretty canny and already have good birds and do alot of swapping etc....indeed i'm the one trying to cadge of them

so far workingmens prices seem to be upto 50 pounds for yb and 500 for stock...but i thought the term 'workingmens prices' indicated a decent pigeon at slightly lower price otherwise, surely, they are 'normal priced' pigeons. so i think those top end prices are to dear. i'll stick to a yb price of 15-20 and stock perhaps 100 otherwise they are normal market prices. :)

i would say about £10-£20 for a yb and maybe 80-100 for stock if its anygood like :D but we all still spend to much on birds

IT WOULD COST YE MORE THAN £10 TO REAR ONE NOW ADAYS :emoticon-0138-thinking:
