Pair up when it suits yer racing plans. If your are a sprint/middle man then get them paired up around xmas and get the young you need then split them a couple weeks before racin and get yer widowhood system sorted. If your distance and natural then leave them into march if you want.

how do i the 2 birds i want to pair up to actly pair up ?

place them in a spare section by themselves for a while, then after a short time, put a nest bowl in, and the cock should start calling the henhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif once they start mating, then move them to their nest boxhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

back after year need advice on pairing up when do you pair up around christmas or later ?

Tommy,my pairing up is done the last week in January, and as the young birds will be darkened they will be mature enough to pair for young bird racing.I have in the past paired up in December and the youngsters don't need to be darkened but have to be kept them extra weeks. It's a matter of preference really but whatever the pairing up date is the birds should be fit and healthy and carrying no excess weight.

I normally pair up my stock & w/hood team around the third week in January. I float the first round of eggs from the stock under the race team, this gives me two rounds out of my stock to race on the darkness system.

I could pair up a good month prior to this and get another round out of my stock to put on the darkness BUT this would mean having to start training these youngsters that much earlier (Its my belief the quicker you get youngsters on the road the better). The added expense of feed and the cost of training these early bred youngsters to me just Isn't worth the hassle. I should also add It lightens the workload for that extra month.

I am doing things differently this year - see how it goes, normally I only take one round from stock and racers - but this year with more stock (retired racers) am only breeding from the stock and taking 2 rounds which will be kept separately, the first round will be bred early and on natural, the 2nd round will be darkness youngsters.

The racers will be paired in Jan/Feb and allowed to sit 10 days only, some of these eggs from fancied pairs will be floated to the stock.

I had 2 youngsters in the race team last year that were '2nd rounds' and they did well - one topping the fed, one was very young and quite immature and missed the first 2 weeks of training but caught up

So I will be pairing up around Dec 6th

For the last few years i have paired early then split them to race on a makeshift roundabout system for the first six races before re pairing for the longer races.

This coming season i'm no pairing until last week in February and racing natural the whole season, will probably need roadwork on the natural but that is ma plan regardless.
