Guest Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 TWO WORDS Your birth brought us closer As death lingered near Your strength as you struggled Gave flight to our fear Down Syndrome they whispered minutes after your birth Two words that portrayed A false image of your worth Those words did not tell us Of the love you would bring Or the power your smile has To make our hearts sing Down Syndrome didn't tell us What kind of child you would be Filled with amazing surprises Shared with your dad and me Hard work, determination, Teaching and learning, it's true Down Syndrome means much of this For each of us, not just you Wonder child, little man You've grown and you've thrived Your every achievement Still fills us with pride No matter the voice used Two words can't describe The fullness you've added To so many lives Down Syndrome, those frightening words Whispered so long ago Never did they prepare me For the person I now know

showman Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 My wife & I were blessed with a DS baby some years ago, and he was the apple of my eye....daddies 'little man'. Unfortunately we lost him at an early age to a congenital heart defect, which went un-noticed. Part of me envies you, believe it or not......all babies are special, but with DS, it goes beyond that !! I offer my sincerest congrats. on your new arrival, and wish you all a very happy and special Christmas.......you're going to enjoy it !! Be strong, God Bless Paul.

holmsidelofts Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 very inspirational that poem. We lost my little boy brandon about 2 years ago, he had downs but had a fatal heart condition and we were told he would only live for a few hours after he was born and we had to make that horrible decision that no parent wants to make, that decision will haunt me and my wife forever, theres not a day that goes by that we dont think of him. You have a beautiful baby that will bring you so much joy. We have to little girls one who is nearly 4 and the other who is 14 months. 2 girls what a handful but we love them so much. Have a great christmas. jas.

steve d Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 I have a 6 year old autistic child and believe me when I say it heis my world along with my 4 year old daughter, I would like to share the following note with you all, please take time to read it. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth; son; patron saint, Matthew. "Forrest, Marjorie; daughter; patron saint, Cecelia. "Rudledge, Carrie; twins; patron saint.... give her Gerard. He's used to profanity. " Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy." "Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel." "But has she patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it." "I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence. She'll have to teach the child to live in her world and that's not going to be easy." "But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?" God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, there is a woman I will bless with a child less then perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says "Momma" for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations." "I will permit her to see clearly the things I see---ignorance, cruelty, prejudice--- and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side." "And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in midair. God smiles. "A mirror will suffice."
holmsidelofts Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Thanks kylie. Yeahs it not easy, one thing it does it make you appreciate what you have in life, we often moan about things that aint worth moaning about, when something like this happens it really knocks the guts out of you. For us it was never about downs, we would have been happy to have the opportunity to have our little boy with us, unfortunately it was not to be. Downs can happen to anyone regardless of age, we had a perfectly healthy little girl first, me and my wife aint that old she was 25 when she fell pregnant with brandon, and we did everything to make the pregnancy a healthy one. We all have to be grateful for what we have in life. My 3 year old loves the birds and cant wait for training to start so she can come with me.
