reading the birds for 2010 thread there is a big difference in the amount of birds fanciers keep i know everyone circumstances are different but what do u think this right amount of pigeons for a fancier to have to be able to the most out of his team if if there that special champion in the  team to give the bird the attention he needs  to perform to his best remember also we all have family's work etc

please include stock birds   in your estimate

For myself personally looking after the pigeons myself i started last season training 47 old birds which i thought was too many as at the 1st 3 or 4 races i never knew every pigeons ring number which is something i dont like but the main reason i dont want that many old birds again is i want it to be a hobby for myself not another full time job as i already have 1 of those and i dont want another wan :o :o ;) ;) ;) ;) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Like others have said there is a lot of external factors to take into consideration.

For me its 24 widowhood cocks, about 10 racing hens. 60-80 youngsters, 10 pairs of stock birds.

We fly a difficult road and have lots of b.o.p's to deal with.

i think it all depends on what racing you are into ,ie if your just into sprint racing i would say you only need a small team of birds but if your into long distance you need a much larger team of birds ,my self i am wintering around 44 old/yearlings  and breed around 30-36 young and if i race the young birds one or two races or even out to 100 miles i would be hoping to have 24/28 left ,ps i also have around 8 pairs of stock birds

its a very good question....because partnerships, generally, are going to fly more . in a perfect world i would restrict lofts to 18 pairs of ob and allocate 20 rings per loft for ybs.

Well 2009/10 I am wintering 38 which is 6 less than last year. I am limited by space. I have 20 nest boxes, and for me thats what determines how many I can keep, and don't like all my boxes filled.

I've 5 stock cocks, 4 stock hens. They are not all mated together, some will be paired with pigeons that are going to channel races. I'd like to be able to send a minimum of 4 pigeons to each of these races. It takes a while to build numbers for that League..  :)

Bit like a football manager I think, you have a pool, but there's eggy hens, injuries, and plans for certain races. You can have too many pigeons, but I also think you can have too few. I dropped 10 pigeons in one stinker of a race last year, 1/3rd of my team gone after only 3 races.

at the end of the day its down to the fancier and the time hes got when i was impartnership with my retired mate we kept more now im racing on my own ive got 9 pair at stock . 17 widowhood cocks all yearlings and there hens i will breed my self 30 youngsters to race . if i wasnt working and i had the time i would have one hundred youngsters and prob 40 widowhood cocks but then i would try and race the full program but as im working full time im just concentrate on the sprints but im not against people sending large numbers and if you limited every one in 20 rings you would only bring pigeon racing to a stop some ones got to pay for the transporter !

conventional lorry transporters are on the way out for most 'feds' . a trailer towed by 4x4 or van is cheaper...so numbers go down and price rises slightly after allowing for the effiency saving. this is going to happen anyway sooner or later.

i didn't say a birdage limit in racing....but by restricting numbers kept thats what you are effectively doing.

why limit people your just cutting your own prize money down and i much prefer it when some one send 40 plus to a race against my six and i win or take the first six its very satisfyin lol

its all hypothetical (apart from the switch away from lorries which is going to happen) but i don't care about prize money. i want more lofts and i think restricting the number of birds would help. unfortunately the big problem with my plan is that pigeon racing would probably go broke as it needs the money/waste that is yb racing.

sorry mis read your post. one of our club's members 'mooted' a birdage limit during the season....i then proposed it at a meeting and i was the only one that voted for it (dizzy)
