ALF Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 WOKE UP THIS MORNING AND THE CAR WAS THICK WITH FROST ANYWAY AT 9.30 THIS MORNING WHEN I GOT TO THE LOFT IT WAS ONLY 2C ALTHOUGH WITH BRIGHT SUNSHINE BUT I NOTICED PEOPLE TAKING THEIR PIGEONS TRAINING? WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHT'S ON TRAINING ON A COLD MORNING THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON? PS...JUST IN HALF AN HOUR AGO AND THERMOMETER IN THE CAR WAS SHOWING 6C
greenlands Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Hi Alan,Living in Scotland or as I do live in Cumbria, you'd never get them trained if you wait for warm weather, just pick the best days and try to avoid East winds. Mine's going when I've finnished this sarnie. Lindsay

WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHT'S ON TRAINING ON A COLD MORNING THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON? PS...JUST IN HALF AN HOUR AGO AND THERMOMETER IN THE CAR WAS SHOWING 6C knock them back early can ruin the birds for rest of season patience is needed we all want to race , but you can burn them up now and have a crap season or you can wait till weather breaks and have a great season
Delboy Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Personally Alan, I like it to be at least 10 degrees before I basket. Although the sun is shining, it is still freezing and for me, training in this weather takes the edge off the pigeons. Granted, if you want to win the early races then get them down the road but the bigger picture happens in June/July
Guest bakes Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 you wont to sit in my back garden then direct line of flight for all the lads in my area got birds coming over in all weathers been like this for a good few weeks now some mornings there 100's coming over back from training wind rain or shine i try to keep my training to good days its very few chances i get as weather has been up and down but wouldnt think of sending in some of the weathers ive seen birds coming over house in its mad all the best
demolition man Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Member in my club been training all winter, i think he's off his head but only time will tell
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 well first race next week so mine went up the road today only 30 miles today gave them there first toss at 40 miles yesterday and they beat me home again , i dont think they really need training but its more for my peace of mind than getting them fit lol
Wizzer Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Depends on what you aim to win. Silly sprint races or the longer races. Personally will not risk training my birds yet just to win one of the early races. Have no interest in club races, so as long as my birds are fit for mid May onwards. I will be happy. To many birds are losted unnesscerly because fanciers don`t train in the right conditions. attitude of some, As long as i can win the first race, don`t matter what I loose along the way. Some say I`m training now and they all get home. But at what cost is it to the bird? Bet they aint about in July. Have a good season everybody anyway.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 i dont think you should be calling the sprint racers silly as these take as much effort and input as the distance racers
Wizzer Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 i dont think you should be calling the sprint racers silly as these take as much effort and input as the distance racers Preparing birds for a quick 2 hour fly is not the same as preparing for a 14 plus hour fly. der wake up....
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 you have no idea what is involved to get a cock fully pumped up ready to fly his silly little sprint race in the quickest time possible , i my self give credit to every one who wins even if its long or short , this sport dosent need people like you who seem to bear grudges on people who enjoy sprint racing
adam owen Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 well said if it wernt for the silly little sprint races aqnd the silly little people who sends then u wouldnt have your so called longer races as u wouldnt have the £££££ to go there
showman Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 At those sort of temps. I wouldn't ask them to do it. One thing you have to also remember, is that whatever the 'ground' temperature is, it's always going to be colder the higher up you go....so, 2 degrees will be much colder in the air, and that's not taking into account any wind-chill !!

For your info I know exactly whats involved. I done it for 12 years, Had 136 wins, topped fed 9 times (6000 plus birds) and simply got bored of the silly races
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 i had 136 wins in six seasons lol and 27 wins in one season alone and have also won from 550 miles but i get bored waiting for the longer race birds to come home so with the time and effort i have i enjoy sprint racing and its no easyer than distance racing
marmite Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 been to cold for training for me ill w8 hope it warms up a bit soon as 1st race nxt week not really bothered if i cant train the older birds as theyve all been 400+ mls last season and they are workin well round loft yearlings i got plenty of time to train them they wont start racing till may atb to all clive

Guest stevie-b Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Nine Fed wins in 12 years: Your P*** ;D ;D pmsl were u flying against yourself in club
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 im sorry for taking this way off the subject but i was a bit offended by some one calling sprint races silly when in this day an age every race is a hard a race to win whether its long or short an credit must be given to all winners of any race imo
david Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Preparing birds for a quick 2 hour fly is not the same as preparing for a 14 plus hour fly. der wake up.... The sweetest fish are always the smallest !!
Alen Gibb Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Sprint races are silly and meaningless to me personally but I have every respect for those who think differently. I am sure it is very difficult to consistently win these short races and to be successful you must be dedicated - they just don't interest me at all - although it is always nice to win at any distance, which doesn't happen very often for me!
blackdog Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 watched trainers going past me today, they were struggling in the east wind ;D my hands were cold enough at ground level never mind what it would be like up there, not had a training chuck yet and if it doesnt warm up a little then im afraid mine wont be going to the 1st race as its a long season, no good ruining them in these eastly winds, it happened 2 years ago, east winds for the 1st 4 races and everyone was cleaned out by 100 miles
pigeonpete Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 took all ours, today at 13.30, 12 miles, was chucking it down and east wind, cleared straight away, and all 24 of them were in when we got back, very pleased :-)
Guest frank dooman Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 if you set your stall out for the distance then no need to train in this i wont be training until its right but dont hold it against any one who is training now every one to their own all the best for the season to all
Novice Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Just finishing off youngsters just now so I would not think about training till they have finished them off.
