DJ Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 ive bought 20 250mg flagyl tabs online but the instructions are printed in foreign i was told by a fancier that a quarter of a tab would be enough to treat mild infections of canker or as a preventative can any others fanciers who have used flagyl tabs advise me :-/ debs
Guest mick bowler Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 It is supposed to be a quarter of 200mg tablet, (or a 50mg dose per bird), if treating (rather than preventing) repeat 3 days after first.
Guest wattle Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 a quarter of a tablet is plenty to give each pigeon after the eat there food, for five days.

greenlands Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 Quarter of a tablet on an empty crop . Lindsay
Guest Jargre- Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 no need to use them BEFORE any symptoms as flagyl is an anti-biotic and won't prevent ... it treats, if needed then 1/4 tablet is the right amount.
frank-123 Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 not looking to add confusion but i was told by tom pennycott the top avian vet in scotland 1/4 tablet miss one day then 1/4 tablet miss a day then 1/4 tablet at a strength of 200mg
alex young Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 Instructions on box of 250mg. 1/4 tablet miss a day then 1/4 tablet.
Guest Jargre- Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 not looking to add confusion but i was told by tom pennycott the top avian vet in scotland 1/4 tablet miss one day then 1/4 tablet miss a day then 1/4 tablet at a strength of 200mg Wouldn't that be only if the birds had a problem because as said flagyl is an anti-biotic and only treats not prevents. :-/
Guest pigeondave Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 would somebody private message me.were to get these tablets.please.thank you.or the website.or phone number.ty.
Novice Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 not looking to add confusion but i was told by tom pennycott the top avian vet in scotland 1/4 tablet miss one day then 1/4 tablet miss a day then 1/4 tablet at a strength of 200mg I agree with this dosage. I also agree that Flagyl is an antibiotic but when being used to treat canker we are not primarily using the antibacterial properties so this dosage is correct.

Sorry but dont agree. Unless you have every bird treated how do you know that they have canker other than the obvious signs in the late stages of the disease? Remember its a parasite that every bird seems to carry, so in effect a "preventative" treatment of this drug will keep the count down and without us knowing will sometimes also be a cure. Some birds can have a higher count for ages without showing external phsical symptons, and can trigger a chain reaction in other birds. I have to say i would only ever use this when a bid is off form or looking down, but i also treat for cocci at the same time, as im not that into regular testing. Most times they pick up, those that dont are no further requred.

Guest Owen Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 What frank123 has said is right. That is if the birds have canker. But Flagyl will not prevent canker and should not be used unless the birds have actually got it. As far as I am concerned, the use of Flagyl will be a major setback for the birds and they will need time to get over it. So it is not something that anyone should use unless they really have to. The less times you use medication the better. On the other hand it is wise to keep a check on the birds by having regular health checks by someone with a microscope.

Your mentallity towards treatment is all wrong and its the type of thought that is killing the birds immune system because your treating for the sake of treating 'just in case'. You should wait for the symptoms its as simple as that, you don't second guess that they are there. Treat when you know it must be treated not when you think it must be treated. Scientific fact and the reason why anti-biotics were created.
