why do most widowhood mixtures contain such a high % of maize, and not dari, rice, barley many mixtures seem to have 50-60% of maize yet the carbohydrates in maize are not much more than the other grains mentioned , is it for the higher fat content that maize has? could a no maize high carb mix work with the addition of fats seeds as the distance increases, any advice of thoughts on  the high use of maize would be good to read,

could a light diet mix (barley, wheat, rice dari, with say 30-50% energy plus be used in the mix from wednesday onwards work the same as maize, then that way fat would only be added when required ,  some peas could be added on sunday and monday after a hard fly to increase the protein

I don't race a big team of pigeons  and when sending over the water I would be sending one or maybe two.I have flew reasonably well in my opinion but never excelled like some fanciers in this area that take distance racing serious, as I say flying a small team most birds go to most races and are not put aside for the special one.Won the club and been well up on fed and combine sheets racing the Gerry + system that's upto Messac at 480 + miles.

I would also like some of the top distance men on here to put a good reply to your question.

as for the alternatives cant see why there should be much difference .

maize is the main source of glucose,so this may be the reason the pigeons vary their intake of maize at different times.having been involved in the making of boiled sweets ,apart from sugar a lot of boiled sweets contain a very high percentage of glucose syrup, which comes from maize.i may not know much about racing pigeons, but i certainly could make good sweets jmocheers wee billy p.s.don,t forget your blackpool rock 60%glucose syrup :) :) :)honest ;)

I think you have to have both best barley and dog tooth maize to get the best from widowhood cocks. I do not like brown skinned corn.

Geri plus is a great corn to biuld them up for a big effort.

I'm going to be buying in maize as a single, and I'd be interested in knowing more about the different types of maize I see advertised: e.g. Popcorn, French, Plate, etc. Which type (s) do you buy and why?

I have tried various types of maize but the one I like best is the big dog tooth variety.

i used to work for a boiled sweet maker as well,in the 60/70s, two parts sugar, two parts pure glucose plus water, plus the wee drop of colour and flavouring.

If you feed them too much small stuff from the off their appetite diminishes the further into the season they go, they become picky. You can switch from maize to small stuff later in the season but vice-versa you'd be hard pushed to get them to eat a decent feed containing maize.

The dog tooth maize is best.  The best part of the grain is the white bit in the middle.  If you see any eaten by mice, they take this part, and leave the yellow outer.

i'm sure people use maize very succsessfully, but i can't get the 'knack'...when i have fed it the birds tend to  'run' fat and won't excersize .
