Just got my first loft build in July and now the worst part of pigeons has just happened, phoned the girlfriend to let my young birds out at 1 30 this afternoon and came home at 2 20 and a young pigeon was lying in the garden with a big hole in the chest died by a sparrow hawk, came in the house to get something to pick it up and it appeared again with a crow chasing it, I was planning on winter training for next year is it worth bothering now if the hawk is sitting by or is it a unlucky chance the hawk was passing by

I hate sparrowhawk attacks I had last month same in garden 1 dead Pigeon, someone told me that Pigeon flying should be supervised until they are in the loft. I would also get a fake owl or something to sit on top of the loft. As for winter flying I don’t do that much as moulting and breeding on January but when it comes near racing season I then fly them often

keep the carcass of the pigeon where it lay, get some baking paper, and spread some honey all over it thinly, lay bird on a quarter of the paper the hawk will be back and hopefully will catch its wings or feathers on it, and ravel itself on it thats how i solved my problem, some fly paper works as well just unravel it and leave around it keep an eye on it though other birds will be attracted too

i was totally heart broke when I came home and seen it in the garden but as you say it’s like looking after kids watching them till there in, the problem I have is the young birds are all different age so I want want them out as much as possible but after today it’s made me think not too let them out till next year

Heart breaking to see this and worse when it happens while you watch, but at least then you have the chance to chase it off. Irregular flying times, keeping them in for a few days after the attack, anything to prevent the SH coming on a regular schedule. They should sharpen up and become more aware, but it is hard to sustain any losses. :)

I had my hens out lunch time. Was cleaning them out walked up to put the bag of muck in the bin when I got back no birds on the loft roof. Walked down towards the loft and up it sprung sparrow hawk hen and a hen got up. I shouted it went I caught the hen and put her into the loft. I thought I was lucky but then saw a trickle of blood running down from her. She did not come down for any food. I am hoping she will be fine in the morning. First real strike in two years. MJB

The sparrow hawk came back with a crow right behind it and the pigeons lifted but I was out the back the pigeons where still trying to come down I shouted them in and I have never seen a faster trap so they just have been scared so they will be staying in for a few months till January when I start winter training them in January because I’m scared to let them out now
