When they start to leave the barley I stop feeding. How can a big bird need the same as a small bird? how can a bird that sits on the roof all day need the same as a bird that flys for hours? How can a bird in a heated loft need the same as one in a cold loft. They kind of seeds you feed depends on the next race long short hot cold head wind tail wind. There is no one feeding for all lofts and birds you have to know your birds and what they need.

You do not need vents at the bottom you have it right if the air is comming in at the roof. -
The Paratyphus vaccine will not stop birds geting Paratyphus and that is a scientific fact. Five inactivated and one attenuated vaccine produced for the prevention of salmonellosis in pigeons were compared in an experimental challenge model. The birds were vaccinated according to the recommendations of the manufacturers and they were infected by gavage with a Salmonella typhimurium (var copenhagen) pigeon strain. The challenged control animals showed severe weight loss, excessive water intake over a prolonged period, and excreted large numbers of salmonellae. None of the vaccines fully protected the pigeons, and only an inactivated oil adjuvant vaccine was able to reduce the severity of the clinical signs significantly. Mortality was low and tended to increase with the severity of the clinical signs. These results do not justify the preventive use of salmonella vaccination in pigeons. Nevertheless, the oil adjuvant vaccine may help in the effective cleaning of lofts after an outbreak of salmonellosis.

A good racing bird does not always make a good stock bird I wish it was that simple. The best breding hen I ever owned was never in a basket and the best racing cock I ever owned never bred a winner and both of these birds where nest mates.
-
You can buy a cheap bird that can go on to win races and bred you a loft full of winners but once it has done this it will no longer be cheap to buy. Some fanciers like to take the short cut and pay more for the good bird.

If birds have not been treated for cocci or canker I do not need a vet to tell me they have it.

You forgot the simple asprin that prevents 100s of things.

How many birds does that carry and what price?

Seen them at the belfast show, the ones for the roof looked ok but the ones at the back would suffer from exhaust fumes. I would go for one if it was one large box the baskets could go into to protect them from the wet roads/rain / fumes.

Found this on this site. There is, to my knowledge, only one quick and certain cure for One-Eyed Cold, namely a 12.5% solution of Tiamutin added to the drinking water at the rate of 3ml per litre of water. This can only be obtained on a vet's prescription, but will cure all but the most severe cases in twenty-four hours and even very severe cases of the disease are cured in forty-eight hours. At the same time as treating the affected bird in this way, all the apparently healthy birds should be put on a ten-day course of Terramycin which is administered by putting it into the drinking water, one teaspoonful to a gallon of water. This treatment will quickly ensure that the infection does not spread.

Sounds like Paratyphus It normally only effects one joint Amoxicillin is a good treatment.

I pair fist 2nd week in Dec and they are all down on eggs 10 to 15 days without lights and have done so for the last 12 years.
-
I have never used lights before pairing up and my birds come down on eggs at the same time as my friends birds who does use lights. You do not need to trick a bird into thinking it is spring so it will pair up. If the birds are in good nick then they will breed.

The fact that the bird is sitting on the top perch tells me more about the bird than the eye ever will.

I fly a small team but a good bird is born a good bird and it dont matter if it is in a loft with 10 or 1000 it is still a good bird. Some fanciers have to breed 100s to try and find them good birds and others only breed form the birds they know will breed them.

what can i try with a infertile cock 10 yrs old
pigeonscout replied to carrera's topic in Breeding, Strains & Families
A small amount of wheatgerm oil = vit E on his food for two weeks then pair him up this has worked for me. Also make sure any meds you are giving him are not stopping him from filling his eggs. -
I have been using Vita Pro from syndicate lofts for 12 years now and would not be without it. You can order it at http://www.syndicatelofts.com/

Name: Piperazine (many preparations) •Description: Piperazine is an anthelmintic used for ascarids. •Usage: Ascarids. Adverse reactions: None. •Dosage: 300 mg/gallon for 2 days. 16 mg/bird for 2 days. •Comments: Very common narrow spectrum athelmintic. It is not commonly used. Drug only sedates the worm and the bird must pass the worm before the drug is gone or it will remain in the pigeon.

When training carrier pigeons in the 2nd world war to fly at night the young birds were released in the dark in corn fields to teach them to get height right away. IF they did not get height they would land in the corn field and could easily pick up to try again. What I found to be interesting was how they trained birds to home both ways. From A to B then from B back to A. The birds where released at A flew to B got food only, then flew back to A for a drink.

When you say wet underneath are you talking about single droppings or a couple of days worth of droppings clumped together ? If it is a couple of days worth then it would be normal for the chip wood to be damp at this time of year.

Birds can become sick for any number of reasons virus, bacteria, worms, bad management etc. Sickness can strike any bird strong or weak. I have yet to meet a top fancier with top birds who has never seen sickness in his loft. Just because a bird becomes sick does not make it a weak bird so treat it with the right medication.

You say (crossed with my scotish natonal winner) can I ask what way it is bred?
